Tyler Hoechlin For Flaunt Magazine 2016
[Downey] is the coolest. Like, I want to be like him when I grow up! You see somebody like that who has accomplished so much, and he still cares about his craft enough to play. Itâs just great to know youâre on the right path. To see him affirm for other people around him at certain moments, too, without even really saying anything shows that heâs a leader. Then you see him off set, heâs even more cool.
Chadwick Boseman.

affirm (v.): to declare or offer emotional support or encouragement

âA few years ago, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife were fans of âHappy Endingsâ and they called me to come in to meet with them. Â When I got there, Robert was like, âI want to create a web presence.â And I was like, âWhy? You definitely donât need to do that.â And he was like, âWell, I want to anyway.â Â So I was in charge of coming up with crazy ideas for him to do on the web. Uh, he did none of them. Â And then he put me in [Iron Man 3] from that, which was awesome.â
Since then, now, heâll still text me if something good happens to me and he sees it.  Heâll text me in the middle of the night. Like weird stuff.  Like, if he saw a movie of mine or something, heâll text me like, âHey itâs your Big Papa here ⌠You did an exquisite job. You didnât push. You didnât pull. You pulled it right down the middle. Home run. Over and out.â And youâre like, âWhat the hell is going on?â
First of all, itâs like 4:00 in the morning and god knows where Iron Man is. And itâs bizarre and you know, I get these pretty frequently! Â The only thing I did say to him once was, one time we were in a meeting in his house and he walked downstairs in, no joke, what looked to be a maternity dress. Â It was 11am and he rolls downstairs in a maternity dress and a giant Rasta hat. Heâs eccentric, you know! Â
That was the one time where I was like, âYou know you look insane, right?â And he goes, âDo I?ââ

Q. When do you think you looked your best, in general? Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. When I watch that movie, I say, âYou were beautiful. And nowâŚyou just need to accept the fact that youâre going to age as gracefully as possible.â I think it was also just because me and the missus were in lockstep. No kids. Not married yet. We saw nothing but each other. And we had a project. And itâs [director] Shane Black. Who, you know, itâs hard not to adore. And 35 days of night shooting. I mean, we were giddy. But I think there was something about sleeping till two o'clock in the afternoon every day, where it reminded me of when we were all beautiful young club kids. It was also very good lighting. - Robert Downey Jr.
âBut as far as straight-up failure, I donât want to talk about failure. I want to talk about moments of humility. Like when you feel suddenly sick and embarrassed but then you have to continue on to the next moment immediately in full view of others. Because itâs not failure if you just recognize, I fell short, and thatâs okay.â
âPhotographer Pari Dukovic is shooting Robert Downey Jr. for the cover of this, the first issue of GQ Style. Weâre in the Downey world headquarters on the Westside of L.A. Pariâs camera is flashing away, but he and Downey havenât yet found their groove, partly because the music isnât quite right. So I start playing reggae from my iPhone through a portable speaker to keep the energy up.
After a while, Downeyâs constant companion Jimmy commandeers my iPhone and fires up the soundtrack to The Harder They Come.Â
As the tune âPressure Dropâ starts to fade out, Downey looks over and asks, âHey, is that Toots?â Yep. âIf you play âFunky Kingston,â Iâll get this thing going.â
Jimmy plays the song.
And thatâs when Robert Downey Jr. proceeds to ska, skank, kung fu, Jagger-move, and Funky Kingston for four minutes and 56 seconds of ecstatic photo-shoot bliss.âÂ
â Will Welch, editor-in-chief of GQ Style.
This is the song that RDJâs dancing to:Â âFunky Kingstonâ (Toots & the Maytals).

Whatâs your relationship to technology? Do you have one? âYes. I am like those guys that dressed up like chimpanzees in the opening sequence of A Space Odyssey. People who can type, theyâre like Merlin. To me, tech ultimately is a distraction from experience. And, look, information is experience. You experience things when you get information. But Iâll tend to sub-intentionally misplace my phone or my iPad or whatever multiple times a week. In the mid-â80s, I was one of the first guys carrying around that big battery with the car phone, because I was like, âBro!â But it was all about, you know, effect.â
