Shane and Ilya managed to hide their relationship for over a decade. What if they manage to hold out a little longer, get married in secret, deal with their mental well-beings, and then get to tell the world on their own terms?
[a great rumination on mental health and the stress of hiding for as long as they did]

âOh shit.â
Shane looked up, turned his head to where J.J. was sat across the aisle. The blue glow of his phone lit up the too-wide whites of his eyes staring down intently at whatever was on his screen. Shaneâs stomach lurched again, anticipating a sudden stop his body hadnât quite caught up to yet.
âThe Centaursâ plane crashed in Tampa.â
There was a moment where everything was still moving, where Shane and the world were still spinning at the same speed they both always had, and then it all came crashing down. Shane wasnât sure whether it was him that had stopped, or the world around him, but either way, in a matter of seconds the distance between himself and the bus he had only a moment ago been sitting in became staggeringly, dizzyingly vast.
The Centaur's emergency landing plays out a little bit worse, and Shane is left with the harsh reality of the cost of loving Ilya in secret.

Evgenia Alexeyevna Rozanova is nine years old when her grandfather dies, and she meets Shane Hollander. This is the first time she speaks to him. It is not the last.
Or: Zhenya Rozanova grows up. She has some help along the way.

Theyâre getting into a rhythm now, though, and Shane can see it. He can see this team winning the Cup this year. He tries not to get ahead of himself, tries to stay focused and go game by game, reminds himself that building up a team takes time and several seasons, but god. He wants this legacy: for himself, for Ottawa, for Ilya. For both of them and everyone else.
Which is why, goddamnit, now is not the time to crash out over fantasies of Ilya working his whole hand down to the wrist into Shaneâs ass and fucking him on his fist. And yet. Shane should know by now that timing and âgood ideasâ are rarely factors in whether or not he gets obsessed with something.
OR: It starts, as a surprising number of things actually do, with a text from Rose.
[someone else rec's this as '17k words of character work disguised as a fisting fic', and I fully second that]

âWere you sleeping with Rose Landry?â LeClaire asked, and Ilya felt his entire world flip upside down.
Ilya scoffed and sank into the chair. He stared at his lap and, for a second, wished he could just say yes. It would have been easier. A simpler explanation. Something everyone else could swallow. âNo,â he answered instead. âI was not sleeping with Landry.â
Coach sighed, the weight of it settling uncomfortably in the office. âSo it was Hollander, then.â
Or Ilya gets called into his Coach's office after Rose and Shane start dating and an uncomfortable conversation takes place. Ilya realizes some things. Also he may need to stop reading his thesaurus.
[obsessed with the idea of Ilya hate-reading the thesaurus]

To be clear, Ilya is grateful the rookies arenât growing up the way he did in the NHL. Ilya took the hazing to the chin â humiliation rituals, beat downs, grueling practices to prove he could âhangâ with the big guns on the team.
That being said, thereâs still some part of Ilya that balks at the request by the gaggle of rookies to watch The Iron Giant, a veritable childrenâs movie at the teamâs latest movie night.
OR: Five times Shane and Ilya were the support system for the Centaur rookies they dreamed of having when they were younger.

AmĂŠlie's work days are usually boring. Sit at the counter, help people find things, process orders. If she's lucky, she'll get great commission when someone shows up to spend money for money's sake. Her only companions her phone and the near constant presence of Shane Hollander's Rolex campaigns.
So, boring.
Until Shane Hollander walks through the door.

No one is going to win a Pulitzer interviewing him, and Shane is okay with that. He spends most interviews rephrasing the same five sentiments--Iâm happy we won or We need to work harder after that loss.
They are a good team; the win was hard fought or They are a good team; there is a lot for us to take away.
And finally: I love playing on this team, for our fans.
Then Ilya Rozanov bursts into his life, and answering questions becomes a little more complicated.

Theyâd considered itâShane being gay. Itâd been an option. But Ilya Rozanov and the way Shane looks at him like heâs the love of his life has blindsided them. Blindsided both of them, and thereâs almost nothing Yuna likes less than being blindsided.
Sheâs not mad, David wants to say. Weâre so proud of you. Weâre so happy for you. We just didnât know.
Somehow we missed it, you falling in love.

Shane lifts one eyelid again to look at Rozanov. His eyes are red-rimmed. Like heâs been crying. âWhyâŚwhy arenât you in Boston?â
Rozanovâs brow furrows. âWhy would I be in Boston?â
âYou, youâre captain. Raiders. Boston.â

In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt. Thereâs a lot to get used to.
