That pesky verbal component… 

I’ve rarely played a game in which people actually roleplay the full casting of a spell. Typically, everyone will be cool with simply saying “I cast _____”, and it happens.

So I decided to ask my friends what they thought the verbal component of a spell would sound like. All of them unanimously agreed that the Handbook leaves it deliberately vague. While this leaves space for player creativity, they all said that they would perform the casting in character, except spells are most often cast in make-or-break situations and it’s difficult to come up with some fictional jargon on the fly. 

Introducing “Say the Magic Words”: some suggestions of utterances to fill in your verbal spell components. 

Izzet Wizard Tribal Package - $10.74

One of the most popular creature types is Wizard. Maybe it’s because of the company making this game, maybe because it’s originally based on D&D. Regardless, they are a very powerful tribe. Mainly they hang out in Blue, but dabble in all colors with Red being the next most predominant. Let’s look at some ways to make use of their power.

Supreme Inquisitor - $1.79 Once you get four other Wizards, you can quickly neutralize your opponents’ decks. Taking out their most lethal cards without even a chance to get them back.

Adeliz, the Cinder Wind - $0.25 Wizards love their spellslinging. So why not pump your Wizards when you do so? The more spells you sling, the beefier those Wizards gets.

Aphetto Grifter - $0.14 Get those nuisance creatures out of the way so they can’t block. You can even force your opponents to use the land/enchantment/artifact that’s hindering you or miss out on using it altogether. This is such a cheap activation to boot.

Docent of Perfection/Final Iteration - $1.23 Both sides of this card will benefit our Wizards greatly. With the front side, when you cast spells you get more Wizards. With the back, they all get a pump and evasion on top of getting more Wizards when you cast spells.

Galecaster Colossus - $0.43 One wizard gets you one bounce. No summoning sickness red tape. No limits on what you can and cannot bounce of your opponents’ stuff so long as it’s targetable. The only downside is you can’t use the ability to save your own Wizards. If that were the case, you can bet your sweet bippy that this card would be at least $4.30. Then as long as this is on the field, tap a Wizard and bounce it back to your hand to save it.

Azami, Lady of Scrolls - $0.27 The classic Wizard tribal Commander and a similar ability to Galecaster. Tap a Wizard, summoning sickness or not, and get a card. This is the go-to because it creates insane card advantage whenever you want or need. She will be hard-pressed to lose her throne as the Wizard tribal commander.

Information Dealer - $0.14 A Top like effect that scales to the number of Wizards you have. Combined with Azami, you can practically guarantee the best card you need.

Sigil Tracer - $5.49 The most expensive card in this package. It can fork any spell for 1U and two Wizards, one counting her. Unfortunately, it won’t trigger Docent/Iteration or Adeliz additional times. Wizards still love slinging spells so extras are sweet music.

There you go, folks. Wizards can be mighty powerful, especially with the newest additions to the ranks. WotC has now made it viable to play 2- and 3-color Wizard decks with Dominaria and Commander 2017. So keep up your Wizard trickery and…
