the way unconditional serotonin can be generated instantly by simply looking at some fish
aquariums. fish tanks. ponds. just look at some fish and you'll know peace and love on earth <3
So I was trolling the collections of the Victoria and Albert museum today looking for images of straw hats, and look what I stumbled upon. It dates from 1750-1780. Is this not the craziest damn thing you have ever seen? I have looked at a lot of hats, especially from this period, and I’ve never seen anything like this!
are you. comfortable

not 2 sound whiny but i wish more attention was given to the importance of art and literature and philosophy and other humanities again so they'll return to being a really great part of what shapes a decade or an era instead of being seen as useless because they don't fit into the capitalist ideal of a productive society
Ugh. This post. Again? When exactly in the human history was given more importance to the arts then now? Does op realizes that we (I'm from Italy but I think this can apply to EU and maybe to the US too) live in a society where you usually have a museum in every city (some of which you don't even have to pay for), even the smaller ones, where we study literature at school, we have FREE access to every piece of information on music, art, drama, opera, literature ever made thanks to internet and public libraries. Art creates a LOT of job opportunities (festivals, museums, exhibitions, concerts, fashion, architecture, film industry...), that's why capitalism sadly managed to permeate some aspects of it (especially talking about books n movies, but hey, at least it's easier to spot what's crap). Saying that art doesn't fit in capitalism (an economic system based on individualism, a concept that gained popularity also thanks to romanticism, and illuminism before) doesn't sound quite right to me. You can argue on the quality of today's art, and that would be reasonable, but you can't say it isn't productive for capitalism.
Society never cared about art and, if it did, it was only for propaganda or for practical purpose (showing wealth). I think this very time we're living in is the one in which people (as of citizens, normal people like me and you) care about the arts in a sincere way the most. Do you think It was possibile for an artisan of the Renaissance to go and spend an afternoon at a museum (which didn't exist back then?). The "free-to-all art" of churches was there to indoctrinate the people, certainly not for a personal need of expression of the author.
Also, we actually live in what many philosopers define as post-post-modern. So yeah, our era IS deeply influenced by philosophy, art, and literature. More then ever before, I dare to say. It's just that we can't decide what's characterizing our era right now. It's too soon, we have to wait for it to end, and then those who'll come after us will recognize those common tendencies that have defined our era that we can't figure out from ourselves right now, cause we're used to them, they're normal to us.
Universities make millions selling humanities degrees, so the liberal arts & humanities are definitely valued by capitalism.
