these bros? thats my boy keith haring’s work - his dad was a cartoonist which inspired him, and he drew cartoons all the time as a kid. he took inspiration from cartoons like mickey mouse and dr seuss’ - in college he often didn’t receive class credits because he’d turn in very socially aware/political works that his professors didn’t accept, also because they were often cartoons and not realism - (some of his political themes: homosexuality, AIDS, anti-apartheid, and the crack cocaine epidemic) - his work started gaining momentum after he drew Them Boys all around the NYC subway system, in white chalk - people started commissioning him to work on bigger pieces and he started creating murals and such - he became friends w a few people, u might even recognize some ! people like madonna, andy warhol, and jean-michael basquiat ! absolutely bonkers - he did body paints for madonna and designed one of her album covers!  - he created a portrait of andy warhol as mickey mouse, and andy warhol photographed him while bodypainting - oh, by the way he was gay - and he spoke up for the AIDS crisis when uh, a certain reagan administration wouldn’t:

- along with the AIDS epidemic, he addressed the crack cocaine epidemic!

- also! …safe sex?

- ne of his aforementioned friends, jean-michel basquiat, died in 1988 from a drug overdose. to commemorate him, haring created “A Pile of Crowns, for Jean-Michel Basquiat”

- haring had opened a shop called the Pop Shop to sell his art for low prices, in regards to this he said : “i could earn more money if i just painted a few things and jacked up the price. my shop is an extension of what i was doing in the subway stations, breaking down the barriers between high and low art” luv him - in 88, haring was also diagnosed with AIDS, which is around when he started the Keith Haring foundation (a year later, in 89)… the foundation was created to help provide education abt AIDS to avoid ignorance, as well as provide education for underprivileged youths  - haring passed away in 1990 unfortunately, but the haring foundation is still up n running ! madonna paid tribute to him by making her first concert in NYC a benefits concert for him, and donated all proceeds to several AIDS charities ❤️ - basically … my point is that i luv this man and everything he did and stood for
