Original source Image description: Historical illustration of a black buffalo (Bos Bubalis) standing on grass. The buffalo is depicted in profile facing right, showing muscular body, curved horns, and red eye. It is chained by the nose to a broken tree stump with a metal collar and chain. Surrounding the stump are some small flowers and plants. Below the image are the animal’s name in Latin and translations in French, German, and English: “Le Buffle,” “Der Büffel-Ochs,” and “The Buffalo.” The illustration is part of a natural history book published in Berlin between 1780-1789.
