The National Art School, 15th August - 11 September, 2022
What I connect with…
This is an interesting collection of works pushing the boundaries of expanded drawing, working with non-traditional art making mediums like masking tape, wool, fluorescent sensor lights, video, and modular steel. Overall the works have a sense of the ephemeral, site specific works that feel like they were made ad hoc in the space, and will soon be disassembled and packed away, or thrown out.
One of the artworks I really connected with was a video artwork showing flies buzzing across a screen; the imagined flight paths of the flies mapping through space gives a real sense of drawing.
The signature work by contemporary indigenous artist Dennis Goulding adds a touch of the personal, with a photo of the artist outside an inner-city Sydney townhouse featuring the same wrought iron fencing as featured in his work. The photograph is viewed through the fence, suggesting the artist and his past is intricately connected, and always present.
Another artwork seems to include an organic mash of wasp nests, again imagining the insects busily moving to create the form, drawing with clay and mud.
The description of the show suggests collaboration between artists; artworks bleed into each other really activating the space, making the viewer look up and down as they navigate through the works. The space is also filled with big gestural lines making the viewer imagine the whole body movements needed to achieve such big fleeting marks on the massive walls.
More of my works in progress will keep working on them
