i have already talked about my thoughts on her somewhat, but i really do love how she's not someone who's easy to like, but too human (almost unbearably so) for me to ever hate. she's ruthless! she's cold! she's just not very nice! but it's impossible for me not to empathise with even a fraction of the crushing weight of the world that she's carrying alone, and the sacrifices that she herself is making to ensure that it's all worth it in the end. while she arguably does have a choice in it that he didn't, she and grace share the burden of being deemed the only person capable of saving humanity and expected to sacrifice everything to do so. it's no wonder that he doesn't hold it against her, even if he might never forgive her (that's not for us as an audience to know). it's an awful connection to share; a terrible thing to not be alone in. an appalling injustice. but at least you're not alone. she's vital to the themes of phm in that regard. she's an irreplaceable part of the narrative, and i'm so glad she exists.

I love how the story still presents it as an injustice that Grace was forced against his will to die on a suicide mission, even without these strong relationships. I love how the story presents this as an evil that still must be done to save humanity. I love how Grace finds his courage not in a lover but in a friend. I love how he turns back from safety and certainty to make sure his friend lives. I love how the story ends. I love how Grace finds fulfillment not in romantic partnership but in friends.
