THE KILLERS - “Bones”

“Bones” is an odd song, a tripartite ode to sex with a heady dash of anxiety thrown in; it’s a sort of “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” for the Xanax generation. The narrator seems to be caught between libido (say what you will about this song, but “don’t you wanna feel my bones on your bones” is excellently phrased) and internal paranoia (I always hear them / when the dead of night comes calling). While the lyrics are reflective and mostly introspective, the song itself is nothing short of an overlarge bombastic synth-rock experience. As I mentioned in an earlier post, though, in Sam’s Town that bombast is just par for the course.

The music video was directed by Tim Burton (yes, that Tim Burton), which explains the presence of the random skeletons running on the beach, among other things. It’s a strangely absurd concept that seems to lack any sort of real intimacy, but maybe that was Burton’s point. “Bones” seems to toe the line between reality and parody, between brief interaction and genuine connection, and the Killers never really give us a straight answer about it. Throw in some last-minute trumpets, and there you have the strange—yet satisfying—creation that is this song.

Legend has it that when the Battle Born, the Silver, the Mining, and the Sage unite, the four will usher in a new era of hope for the people and perhaps, one day, usher in a new era of peace for the world...
