The darkness had hardly even been on his radarâwhere had the day gone? The whole thing had felt like a handful of minutes at most, but he supposed when you spent so much time suffocating on your own mortification and laughter, time would grow wings. He did suppose that if they stayed out much longer, they wouldnât much be able to see their own partner in conversation. There was a remarkable lack of lamps about. âSocial meandering is just as worth it,â Rival replied, relaxed now that the tension had lowered. With a big sigh, more to catch all the lost breath than anything, he squinted at his surroundings.
âBut remember how we both agreed we didnât know where we were?â He peered at Thunder, snorting subtly before rubbing at his jaw because finding their way back would be about as much of a feat as it was to avoid blushing during flirtations. âIf we end up getting properly lost, I think there will be issues to be had, but weâd best⌠beat the darkness if we want to have a chance.â The end of his statement was more a question, a suggestion, than a definite position. An awkward pause from Rival and he was pointing to a distant lamppost that had just flickered on. âGo to the light? I know they say we shouldnât, butââ Sue him for bad jokes. Fighting a guilty grin, he moved toward it, shoving his hands in his pockets. He was allowed to be morbid. He had died, and had practically earned the right.
Subtly, almost nervously again, wrinkling his nose and rubbing his palms together, he said, âDo you even know where I live?â There had been a purpose to his wanderings, somewhat, or at least a âside-questâ and it had been to orient himself to his dorms, but despite what he had said, he strongly suspected he had gotten lost after all. âLuna dorms,â he offered quickly. âI would have thought the one underground would be the Terra dorms or something.â
âVery true,â Thunder mused giving Rival a solemn nod before breaking out into a slow grin. âYouâre lucky you happened upon someone as gifted in the art of social interaction as myself.â He batted his eyelashes for effect before he was unable to hold in his laughter. He wasnât sure if luck is the word the other would use considering he was just now beginning to return to his normal color and catch his breath.
The fallen glanced around them with a small frown. He had completely forgotten they had no idea where they were. âLost is a state of mind. Weâll be fine,â he offered with a small shrug. Rival was right, of course, but it seemed like something someone wise might say. The darkness wasnât much of a concern to the fallen, but the things that came along with it definitely were. Thunder looked to where Rival had pointed before turning to back stare at him for a second before bursting into laughter. Did he really just say that? He followed behind Rival trying to calm himself but every time he looked at Rival or the lamppost a fresh wave of laughter began to bubble up his throat. The beauty of it all was that he had no idea that Thunder was actually a bit of an authority on the light and could list off hundreds of reasons to avoid it at all costs. âIâm sorry,â he breathed. âThat one caught me off guard. For future reference, I would advise against going towards the light.â Of course, it was a very different light he was talking about, but the lamppost did help ease his nerves a bit.
âNo,â Thunder said simply with a small shrug. ââBut what if I did? How creeped out would you be?â He wiggled his eyebrows up and down while shoving his hands into his sweatshirt pocket. âLuna,â Thunder echoed trying to remember where the dorm was. He knew it was the flat one. âOh, I know all about Terra. Thatâs where Iâm at,â he explained turning to squint in the distance before letting his head fall back in defeat. Despite the light contamination from the lamp, the sky was beginning to fill with stars. âDo you know how to read the stars?â He asked suddenly spinning to face Rival. âThe mountains are North of campus, and the main building is pretty much as South as you can get before hitting city,â he proclaimed as if he had just discovered a cure for the common cold. âThat means we have to be somewhere in between.â
