ofheroesandscholars: LANCELOT
“I’ve made my penance and I’ve made my peace. The only one who seems to disregard that fact is you.“
He felt forgiven by Arthur. The king was the only one who truly mattered with such things, after all. Merlin himself seemed to forget Lancelot’s upbringing: mortal, yes, but far past that all things considered. As much as he was a child of man, he was raised by the fae, granted enchantments and blessings by one of the most powerful of them: The Lady of the Lake. One of many Ladies of the Lakes, but each of them powerful as the other, and certainly a match for Merlin were it to come to such things.
“A threat?” Lancelot asked the wizard, almost a laugh caught in his throat. “One that I won’t take lightly,” he conceded, “but I will tell you that I am not so easily destroyed as a simple hanging. It’ll hurt, that I know, but her Ladyship will not be so kind if she hears word that her son was attempted to be executed. Even more so if it were you that had ordered it.” The knight shook his head, understanding Merlin’s threats but thinking him a fool all the same. “I may be a warrior,” he spoke, “Arthur’s warrior,” he clarified, “but I myself hold power. You can hate me, despise me all you want, but you will have armies of fae taking Camelot in an instant if such things happened.”
Lancelot refused to be terrorized by Merlin. If the knight was to be persecuted for the crime of falling in love, then so be it. He would hold a cooler head though, that was to be certain. And he certainly refused to be Merlin’s slave. He knew the wizard only thought him to be a simple attack dog, but it would take a curse for the knight to obey any command from the sorcerer.
“You’re a bigger fool than I suspected if you think the FAE will fight a war for you. I should know.”
HE WAS, after all, a changeling. Scotsmen always feared magic, hence why he ventured so far from home when the time finally came for him to grow in his own rite. THOUGH Lancelot’s insinuation nearly makes him LAUGH. He knows not of what kind of power he TOILS with, and certainly not in regard to MAGIC he had no claim to in the first place.
“You mistake me. A figure of speech, though I rather think it’s wasted on the likes of you. And I can certainly assure you that this act of yours does you no good. It wasn’t a threat Lancelot. I gain nothing from such facts. You’ll be on your merry little way. Riding around on some high horse because you seem to think your penance was nearly enough for the act you committed. As I said–––live in your delusions if you like, it makes no difference to me whether you do or don’t. But the truth, as it were, is that you walk upon ice so thin. I am not so easily convinced of your redemption as Arthur might be.”
HE TILTS HIS HEAD, book shutting with a grim but wicked expression across his features. LANCELOT was a particular nuisance to him. He never much understood the nature of why there NEEDED to be a round table of knights, but it was Arthur’s wish. Some good that did him after all.
“What I expressed was a PROMISE. Because I certainly don’t trust a word from your lips. And you can say what you like of me, but everything I’ve ever done was for Arthur. The fact that you and Guinevere still draw breath is a testament to that fact. But should you find yourself straying from the idea that Arthur is your SOLE priority and stray once again from that code you so VEHEMENTLY love to throw around then I will make sure that next time you aren’t treated so gently.”
A pause.
“That’s all. The insinuation of me hating you is laughable. You don’t matter enough to hate. If I am truthful I don’t care what happens to you. You’re a pawn. That’s all you’ll ever be Lancelot. This self importance you hold, specifically with the fae just goes to show you understand nothing. But I suppose that isn’t a surprise. Now if you don’t mind I happen to be busy doing actual work and upholding MY oath to Arthur.”

lcrdjohn: STRAGGLER
most men likely didn’t like to lose at chess , or cards for that matter .. but he had been DISTRACTED . a flicker at first , light playing a trick on him , he knew that hair was not as red as his eyes wanted him to believe , and that one certain scot would never spend his time pretending to tell someone’s fortune with a deck of cards . but as john lost another game of cards he figured that he might as well , the last time someone told his fortune they had been right , even if it had been meant as a curse . would this be different ? another scam ? likely just that , someone who was good at people , the cards simply to get a reaction . did someone smile when they saw the lovers on a card before them , or frown ? maybe he should have taken on the trade of tarot himself .
it’s the way the fire sometimes seem to play in the stranger’s hair that draws john in , excusing himself to the men he’s been playing cards with , and cross the room . the scottish accent did NOTHING to help his nerves as he sat down , but he smiles at the stranger anyway . “ no one wants bad news .. ” so what was he doing here ? “ how much for a reading ? ”
“The unfortunate conundrum of man. They want what they cannot have, and do not want what they inevitably deserve it would seem.”
HE’S not usually so open with his wisdom but the unfortunate truth was that THERE SEEMED to be a rather UNPLEASANT nature by which this man seemed to exist. Tensions were inexplicably high, and he suspects a past by which FEW could speak fondly. A GESTURE to the seat before him, tarot deck returned to his hand as he leans back idly. PART OF HIM is inclined perhaps to assume the worst, but ‘only the cards would tell’. HE’D be hard pressed to believe that offering a POORLY offered fortune might cause him grief but MERLIN was not in the business of BUTTERING people up. He feared no man these days.
“Have a seat and I’ll tell you once I’ve finished actually doing it.”
HE’S MORBIDLY inclined to see what exactly he’s about to walk into. The folly of man was their fear of the unknown, and it was a RIGHTFUL fear to say the absolute least of it.
“I warn you though, the cards do not lie.”
And by that he means that he’s not going to FALSIFY a reading for the sake of maintaining good graces. He’d learned the hard way that he wasn’t always going to be able to make nice with everyone, but he didn’t care about such things before and he didn’t plan on starting now.
ofxavalon: MORGAN
‘ a lie of omission is still a lie, my dear. ‘ she had never shied away from her lies and manipulations, at least. ‘ how many centuries now and you still speak as if i am your apprentice and not a high priestess of avalon. ‘ yes, her first introduction to magic had been at his hands, like unwrapping a gift. but merlin had not been her only teacher. ‘ how much further can your horizons go, merlin? ‘
“Infinitely so.”
THE CONVICTION of his words is clear, AND the subject by which she speaks suggests she’s been BUSY while he’s been away. KEEPING ARTHUR ALIVE no less. The work of a proper wizard was never done was it. Arms cross over his chest, head canted to the side as he continues.
“As I recall, you CHOSE to leave my tutelage because I kept things from you on purpose. Your draw to magic and mine are one in the same but even now I worry perhaps you do not understand the gravity of the power we wield.”
Merlin adding a sarcastic "sire" to an already scalding burn:

“It often happens that the real tragedies of life occur in such an inartistic manner that they hurt us by their crude violence, their absolute incoherence, their absurd want of meaning, their entire lack of style. They affect us just as vulgarity affects us. They give us an impression of sheer brute force, and we revolt against that. Sometimes, however, a tragedy that possesses artistic elements of beauty crosses our lives. If these elements of beauty are real, the whole thing simply appeals to our sense of dramatic effect. Suddenly we find that we are no longer the actors, but the spectators of the play. Or rather we are both. We watch ourselves, and the mere wonder of the spectacle enthralls us.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

“Put that over there. Make sure you place it exactly on the marker though or this will not work.”
She’d asked for some LESSONS today and it was the perfect opportunity to expose her to THE VARYING forms of magic. Surely that was the best way she’d learn. BY EXAMPLE not by watching. He crouches down and sets the last OBJECT, a small crystal, down onto the ground before glancing back at her.
“Now, observe. See this line here? Say it and chant it until you see the crystals illuminate. From there you’ll move to this next line here. And while you do that, I will stand on the other side. We’ll be conjoining our power so for this to work you need to make sure you focus.”
HE NODS to her, moving across the way, ARMS gently outstretch, hands illuminating as she starts to chant.
“This is paramount. You need to focus. This will have consequences if you don’t. Do as I taught you. Clear your mind of any and all thoughts. Find a point in yourself. THE MAGIC. Find it. Find that power and focus on it. GRAB IT. Make it yours...”
