duncan. i. tall, scrawny kid who always believed that he was meant for great things. tried very hard to become a knight but never had the strength nor the skill in swordsmanship to be recognised as potentially one of the greats. however was extremely popular amongst his peers for his charming and gallant personality. and with his name ( and father’s money ) he was able to begin his journey towards knighthood by being a ward to one of the most prominent families in the westerlands. ii. over the years he grew taller and stronger, getting more adept at his horse - riding and sword - fighting though he was seemingly never enough to be a member of the kings guard. that was until a battle took place, in which the lannister fought bravely, exercising everything he’s ever learnt in an unbelievably perfect display of valiance and strength, earning him a place in the southern monarch’s kingsguard at eighteen years of age. ( unbeknownst to him, it was all an act orchestrated by his power - hungry father, who had paid and blackmailed a knight from the kingsguard to knight him in the earliest display of his ‘ adequacy. ’ for his father was greedy for information, making duncan a foolish little spy on the royal family. and duncan, being young and a little foolish, relayed information he did not know was of any worth, mere as a form of conversation, to his father, unaware of the chain reaction he might be catalysing ) iii. and finally, at thirty years of age, he was awarded the position of lord commander of the kingsguard. and everything he has ever dreamed of finally crystalized ( though he dares not mention the times he was broken his oath, taken up a lover and having a child ... ). and at thirty - seven years old, it was under his command, under his protection, that the king was assassinated. it was then he lost his position, though grateful that the now - monarch allowed him to retain a position in the queensguard, he misses his duties ( his title, his reputation, his dignity ) as lord commander.
