It's weird when people say that Zoro is a stoic, unkind character because the first time we met him, he's tied to the cross because he cared too much. He's imprisoned because he interfered and helped the little girl- Rika -in need:
Also for someone supposed to be "uncaring" he eats the rice balls the little girl made - food that even Luffy finds awful- and tells Luffy to inform her that the food was delicious as to not harm her feelings:
On Wano, he forms a similar relationship to the one he had with Rika, with Tama. He feels protective of the little girl and he gets offended on her behalf towards the people who put her on extreme poverty.
That it's lovely demonstrated on the scene below. Zoro was calling Luffy out for causing a commotion by beating the Beast pirates. But once he found out that Luffy beat them because they wasted food, it reminded Zoro of Tama- and how people like her lived in extreme poverty because of Beast pirates- and he agreed to beat them, too:
For Zoro, who experienced the injustice of death on a very young age - being an orphan as a little kid and especially Kuina's unexpected death- life has a great value. This isn't limited to his own life or the lives of the people he loves. We have various examples of him valuing the lives of total strangers.
Like for example on Saboady Archipelago, when he carried a total stranger in his back to get him medical aid:
On Wano, he rescued Hiyori and Toko , who were complete strangers to him at the time. Just knowing that an injured woman and a little kid needed his help was enough for him to interfere and save them:
We even witness Zoro extend such kindness to his enemies. On Skypiea, he asked Chopper to heal Wyper before him:
And since life has a great value to him, it makes sense that he's respectful of death and the dead,too.
When Tonayasu died, Zoro was really offended that people were laughing at his death, before Hiyori explained him the reason of their laughing:
And since this is getting too long, just remember: underneath Zoro's cool mask, lays a kind heart. He's cares way too much about others, even strangers. And Oda- sensei has highlighted time and time again.
