Girl 1: can it die?

These images are a part of a series called "Scenes and Types," inspired by nineteenth century erotic postcards of Algerian women intended for European viewers and the legacy of Sarah Bartman, the "Hottentot Venus."

Bartman was a woman from Southern Africa who was displayed in a cage during the 1800's. She was considered a spectacle and became a side show attraction because, in European's eyes, she had "unusually large buttocks." After her death, her body was dissected and her genitals displayed in the Museum of Man in France until the middle of this decade.

With this work I examine ways in which Black women's bodies have been seen through white supremacist patriarchal ideology and create images that are oppositional to those racist, sexist and heterosexist constructs. By including myself in the photographs and foregrounding the subjectivity of Black women, I challenge the power dynamics that continue to circumscribe our images in this culture.
