Sōjun Kuchiki He was known to be a kinder, more open-minded individual who did not value extravagance like most nobles. Sōjun was empathetic towards the struggles of others and would often put aside his expectations to become a talented Soul Reaper to better provide support to the less fortunate. Being a man of poor constitution much like Jūshirō Ukitake, his insight on the unique struggles and privileges of every being in Soul Society was a valuable characteristic. Byakuya was not the first to appeal before the elders of the Kuchiki clan to ask for a favor. Sōjun requested to become the sixth division lieutenant despite being in succession to the 27th head of the clan, Ginrei. His motivations for doing so were of altruistic reasons, and not so much to preserve the Soul Societies laws. Not to mention Sōjun did not have the fighting spirit of the more militaristic individuals that served in the Gotei 13. This was often a point of contention between him and Ginrei.
Like father, like son. Sōjun was also a widower and often got caught up in his work while leaving Byakuya to the be cared for by the servants. Not purposefully, however, he was a good father when his time allowed it. Still, it can be said that both Byakuya and Sōjun unintentionally leave more to be desired in there relationships with others. Especially after his passing, many conversations that Byakuya could have had to better understand his father’s motives were never had.
