Hi there! i first wanna say how much i adore your blog because its been helping me deconstruct biases i didnt even know i had and helps me bring awareness to others!

so my dad grew up very irish catholic, went to catholic school until high school and grew up in a small rural community which was nothing short of a hippie commune (and if you didnt catch already everybody was white where he grew up). not that long ago we were driving around running errands, just me and him. a group of young muslim girls wearing hijabs and one wearing a niqab walked on the sidewalk next to our car. he sighed and told me:

“I dont understand why they wear that. it’s not gonna be the end of the world if they show their hair.” i got upset and quickly pointed out that nuns he grew up around wear hair coverings all the time, many jewish men wear kippahs on their heads, why is it suddenly so bad and something he couldnt understand when muslim women and girls did it? i even brought up his mormon friends and coworker who wear garments at all times.

then he went on a rant about how all muslim women are oppressed (even though not all of them wear head coverings) and just started spewing a bunch of weird rhetoric that played into the stereotype that arab women are oppressed by the “savage” men around them. he didnt say that directly but it was clear he was thinking that.

after this incident i sent him a crap ton of articles about how saying that is very harmful and perpetuates disgusting stereotypes and it actually worked! i even sent him your blog and he’s been much much better about it since.

Wow, I didn’t think it would actually help someone!

Okay cleaned up my inbox, there was 200 asks in there and only three were genuine questions/experiences.

Also since some people can't read pinned posts anymore. I'm not transgender, nor am I gay. Idk why asking for Non-Muslims to respect Muslims who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community warrants crackers to call me transphobic slurs.

I can word a post calling out people for their hypocrisy however I please. I don't care if it's "too aggressive" or "bad to wish that people get chucked into saw traps". I'll be meaner next time.

One time I was in my home country and trying to get food from a local restaurant with a friend. This was close to many tourist traps, but not close enough to be bombarded by them. Sometimes they come and they go, but most importantly, it’s the locals who are the main demographic.

The whitest tourist I have ever seen in my entire life—so white they could blend in with the snow—enters the restaurant, comes up to me, and says “konnichiwa!”

This was in Saudi Arabia.

Pt 1: Islam and it's basics

Islam is an Monotheistic Abrahamic Religion, meaning that the religion is based on worshipping the God of Abraham. It shares this category with Judaism and Christianity.

The word Islam (إسلام) has three root letters S-L-M (س-ل-م). Those root words general meaning is Peace, Saftey and Submission etc.

The followers of Islam are called Muslims (capital M btw) Muslims means "those who sumbit". Together Muslims are called the 'Ummah' aka the wider Muslim community.

Most Muslims refer to God as Allah (SWT) , Allah just means 'The God' in Arabic. Allah does have a different name however, 99 beautiful names in fact.

Muslims believe that Allah (SWT) is the one true god and Prophet Muhammad Ibn 'Abdullah (SAW/PBUH) is his final messenger. Allah (SWT) has no wife, no children and no equal according to the Quran (Islam's Holy Book).

Prophet Muhammad (SAW/PBUH) on the other hand is simply a human being, we do not worship him at all. We just respect him, his family and his companions to the second highest degree.

You might be wondering what does the acronyms of (SWT) and (SAW/PBUH) mean. SWT means Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, "Glory to Him, The Exalted". SAW means Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Salam, "May Allah give peace and blessings upon him". PBUH is another way to say Peace Be Upon Him.

Islam has Six Pillars of Faith; Belief of Allah, Belief in His prophets, Belief in His Angels, Belief in His Holy Books and Belief in the Day of Judgement.

Not to be confused with the Five Pillars of Islam; Proclaimation of Faith (Shahada), Observation of Salah (Prayer), Giving Charity (Zakat), Observing Fasting in the Holy Month of Ramadan (Saum) and Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina (Hajj)

not arab myself, but a few months ago me and two friends were having a conversation and SWANA* people came up. they started making terrorist jokes and wouldn't listen when i told them that those kind of jokes said in that manner were racist.

one of them was black and both were queer and trans so they know how hurtful jokes about minorities can be, too!!

*(though not all are Arab, but i think enough are to count putting it here? tell me if otherwise)
