Any tips on how to throw up more and not quite so painful for my throat? I just used my pointer and middle finger this time, but only thew up a tiny amount and my throat is very sore
Hello love
I personally have never purged before, mostly due to my knowledge of what purging does to your body and the lack of aid it provides in losing weight.
Complications of purging:
I’m a biochem major, and the complications of purging scare me so much that I don’t think I could ever do it.
When you purge, you regurgitate stomach acid. Stomach acid is EXTREMELY acidic; it can dissolve metal. Stomach acid has a pH=1, almost the same as battery acid. Reference this pH scale:
Stomach acid is supposed to remain in your stomach: you have specialized cells in your stomach that help protect your stomach lining from being damaged. These cells are not present in your esophagus and mouth. What I’m saying is that by purging, you are bringing your unprotected esophagus/mouth/teeth into contact with an acid that can dissolve metal.
Oral complications of self-induced vomiting:
• cheilosis (painful lesions at the corner of the mouth)
• pharyngeal soreness (soreness at the back of the throat from the acidic stomach contents)
• dental erosions, dental cavities, and periodontal disease (“inflammation and infection that destroys the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth sockets”)
• enamel destruction/erosion, often resulting in thermal tooth sensitivity
• gingivitis (gum disease, a form of periodontal disease)
• sialadenosis (enlargement of the salivary glands (parotid swelling)
Esophageal and GI complications of self-induced vomiting:
• Esophagitis, esophageal erosis, ulcers, and bleeding (thought to result from the contact between acidic contents of the vomit with the esophageal mucosa)
• Heartburn and acid-reflux symptoms (often a sign of the above)
• Mallory-Weiss tears (minor self-limited bleeding, goes away on it is own if you abstain from bingeing/purging)
• Spontaneous reflux of acidic contents into the lower esophagus can also occur (because the lower esophageal sphincter gets lax)
• Esophageal strictures (narrowing or tightening of the esophagus)
• Esophageal rupture (though rare, it is fatal in approximately 20%; classic symptoms include: severe chest pain, painful swallowing, rapid breathing, rapid heart beat)
(I just copied and pasted these from this article: https://www.scienceofeds.org/2013/02/07/medical-complications-of-purging-in-bulimia-nervosa/)
Weight Loss (or lack there of):
Research shows that purging does not help you lose weight and in fact, can make you gain weight. Purging does not completely halt food absorption, and therefore, is not helpful in aiding weight loss.
Conclusion:
I am not a doctor, but from what you have told me, it sounds like you may be experiencing pharyngeal soreness. If you continue purging, this will only get worse.
If you’re wondering if I’m trying to scare you, honestly my answer is yes. I once wondered about purging but when I did research about it, I became scared out of my mind.
I personally feel like the cons outweigh the pros. I really really hope you will do more research on how purging damages your body. It’s not worth it. You deserve better, love ❤️
