* 001 ↷ STEELE , CRISTYN .
cristyn is staring. full on, solidly, stuck staring at him like a deer in headlights. she blinks a couple times, his voice playing over in her head like a scratched cassette — he knows, he’s always known. what the f u c k does that even mean?? her brows are creased intensely to the point where it translates her befuddled disposition ; a vein unveiling itself in light of her blood pressure taking a hike, a key implication that she’s kinda UPSET. “————what do you MEAN you’ve a l w a y s known, ALARIC???” tone as stern as matriarch’s ; neither of them can turn away from this now. it seems like her twenty years of failed curiosity has only led to more unanswered questions, and now’s not the time for him to be pandering at his cuticles. she leans and draws a pointed finger across the table in an attempt to redirect his attention. “what the hell does that mean??” she does her best to keep the volume low, but there’s a desperation in her voice that pleads for an explanation.
HE RECOILED SLIGHTLY at her tone , flinching . all of the possible outcomes to this conversation quickly go through his head , and he shifted UNCOMFORTABLY in his seat because in most of them , he can so easily lose cristyn . taking in a breath to calm his nerves , alaric paused for a moment to gather himself before everything comes spilling out , ❝ when .. when i was eighteen — ❞ he shook his head , ❝ you , you were only seven at the time . but i spent ALL SUMMER looking for you and your parents . i just .. i guess i wanted to see you before i left for university , make sure you were OKAY .. my mom died three years prior and i don’t know , ❞ alaric sighed and gave a defeated shrug , ❝ it seemed like the right thing to do at the time — i was NAIVE , believing in things like destiny and fate .. then i did find you . you’re parents ... they introduced me as your brother’s friend or something , you probably don’t remember but ... your parents talked to me and cristyn , you have to UNDERSTAND , i made a promise to them that i wouldn’t approach you , tell you , anything — they were very clear . ❞ he paused , his lips thinning into a line . he hated this , every minute , but he knew that he had to keep going , he couldn’t keep anymore secrets from her if he had any HOPES of this relationship working in the future . ❝ i think .. i think they wanted to tell you themselves but i guess they never got around to it .. ❞ eyes downcast , alaric furrowed his brows together in a dejected look before looking up again to meet her gaze . ❝ then .. jessica INTRODUCED us and it felt like FATE . i wanted to tell you , so badly , you have to believe me but then .. i found out that your dad DIED and it — it just felt WRONG , so i kept my promise and ... i’m — i’m sorry , cris . ❞
