People who spend lots of time thinking about if we're in a simulation- I gotta ask why? Why do you care? The simulation is defined as being indistinguishable from reality, so what exactly is the advantage in treating it like a simulation?
Is it because you think you're gonna bust out all Neo-style and save the world, or at least join up with a band of attractive crusty rebels against the machine? Cuz that would be kinda cute but I don't think that's actually it- the people I've known who are into that line of thought are not what we'd call rugged survivalists.
Is it because you think that being aware of the simulation will grant you some degree of power over it? Some capability to 'hack' reality? I can see the vibey logic there- like you won't find the exploits or points of vulnerability if you're not looking for them- but I don't think that's actually an inherent quality of simulations. If it's indistinguishable from reality then you're not gonna see a glitch; if you think you do, you've been tricked. Like how it works in reality. And besides, if you're not trying to escape the simulation but rather just enrich yourself within it, you're much better off just doing the old tried and true: helping wealthy people protect their assets and/or acquire more. That's been the hack.
Is it religious conditioning? A need to feel the presence of a Creator and a reason to imagine that existence serves a purpose? I could understand that
Is it just a way to deal with the overwhelming realization that everyone around you has just as detailed and complex of a story to their lives as you do? A way to escape the uncomfortable sonder and be the main character again?
I feel like there's a bunch of that last one going around.
