The wolfâs heavy lids remained shut as her chest rose and fell, trying to catch her breath. Even talking hurt. Making a mental note to refuse any more children from coming out of her, Arcadiaâs eyes peeled open only as Rachelâs thumb brushed over the back of her hand. âI donât want to restâNot until I see her.â Her hand shook in Rachelâs grip, growing impatient as the cries of her daughter filled the room.Â
Nealon, followed by a nurse with the baby in her arms, returned to the bedside. âSheâs perfect, ten fingers and ten toes. Weâll be back to clean you up in a few minutes.â Nodding to the nurse, the baby was laid in the crux of Arcadiaâs arm, hand curling around her bottom to support her as the other hand squeezed Rachelâs once again.Â
Tears fell freely over her cheeks as the infant seemed to quiet now that she was close to the wolfâs chest, lips pressing against the crown of their daughterâs head. As the room cleared, she tugged for Rachel to join her in the bed, mesmerized by the tiny life resting on her. âSheâs a chip off the old block,â Arc added with a tired smile, releasing the otherâs hand in favor of cupping Rachelâs cheek. âI love you. Both of you,â she stated quietly, shy eyes falling onto her wife now.
Rachel didnât dare touch the child.  In fact, when Arcadia dropped in hand to cradle her,   Rachel began to pull a- way -- perhaps to help Nealon with some of the files, get a more detailed evaluation of the babyâs health, anything that could keep her  hands  and  her mind busy until she settled herself back down.   Then Arcadia had her hand again, though, and she was trapped.Â
And then she said it.Â
Her already rapid pulse  must  have  tripled and she felt her face grow hot, then her eyes start to burn.  Also the primal urge to flee was going all the more painful,   yet Rachel wrapped her fingers around Arcadiaâs, swallow- ed dryly, and whispered:
âYou know that I do, too -- I do love you.â   She was lost for words after that though. Her gaze dropped moment- arily to the child --  their  child  -- and she squeezed her eyes shut.   Even quieter than before,  Rachel said:  âI have no talent for this.â
