When I wasn’t reading this book I was consistently thinking about it and couldn’t wait to finish. This was my first time reading sci-fi in a good while and I’m so glad I chose this one!

Darrow’s character is passionate and full of rage (we love a character ready to overthrow their government). I’ve read reviews mentioning that his character is a little too perfect. But I would beg to differ. His biggest flaw is also what gives him strength; rage. He even admits so in the end of the book, he is quick to anger. I state later that his roadblocks were overcome quickly and I believe some of those hindrances were of his own doing. Thus making him flawed in ways that we can almost relate to. I love that even though he speaks so maturely through most of the novel, we can still see his age through his emotions and rash decisions. It was jarring at times to see such a contrast.

Even though it started off with a dramatic loss for Darrow, which aids in the beginnings of character development, we don’t see much after that. Once he’s at the institute many of his failings or shortcomings end up with a solution pretty quickly. That isn’t meant to minimize the gore and trauma, especially what the other students went through. I just think that many roadblocks he encountered were overcome easily and conveniently.
