đ¨ Warning â ď¸ I know this will be controversial and maybe unpopular, I also might come off as harsh but I'm just very passionate about this. Just know that I have nothing against you if you disagree, as long as you can accept and respect my opinion too. I was going to hold back and have been trying for a while but this is bothering me so much. I need to get it off my chest and say how I really feel.
But this page of Tinker's letter to Belle is sad to me and not for the reason I'm supposed to find it sad
I really don't like how desperate they are to keep reminding us of Tinker, how much he didn't want to become Eggman, and how he was "forced" to do so by Starline. I don't like to see him say he doesn't want to "lose [himself] to this nightmare" of getting changed back into Eggman because I don't like how they act like Tinker is a poor prisoner trapped inside nasty Eggman against his will and that deep down, Tinker is really a part of him and he genuinely doesn't want to be who he is as his real self.
It certainly feels like it implies that, since that awful out of character moment in #23, when they seem to act like a part of Tinker is actually still in there, where he remembers and reflects on being him and ughhh no that'd be bad. :( Eggman isn't ashamed of who he is. Being Eggman isn't a 'nightmare', he has fun Being evil and making his crazy deadly creations and selfish plans of world domination, the Eggman Empire, and Eggmanland. The only part of it that he hates is losing to Sonic.
Eggman LOVES himself and what he does, truly. We see him having a blast in the games and they've never implied otherwise. He's an egotistical bastard that has fun being evil because it's his choice, nobody forced him and this is genuinely how he wants to accomplish his goals. That's what makes him such a great villain and even inspiring in a way. Not through his evil lol but the way he's unapologetically, openly, and proudly his true self without regrets. He chose his path confidently and wasn't forced into it, so seeing that concept exist in any capacity and situation regardless of context irks me.
To think of him being a prisoner trapped inside a monster and really all he wants is to do good like Mr. Tinker, so he was forced into being evil Eggman and there's still Tinker in there that's "lost to the nightmare" actually upsets me because it ruins what makes him so loveable and inspiring to me. And this shouldn't even be happening at all. Mr. Tinker is not Eggman, he just had amnesia and couldn't remember who he really is and what he really wants. It shouldn't be a genuine part of him, why are they acting like it is? It makes no sense and this along with the #23 scene implies my worst fears of him truly not wanting to be Eggman and be evil, when that isn't true in the games and that's a GOOD thing.
This is doing so much harm in the way people see his character, erasing his credibility as a villain, and supporting misconceptions and it's only getting worse. I hate how much IDW has just been focusing on Tinker and Eggman failing and being incompetent way more often than not in the past three years. We barely get actual villainous moments in comparison and he doesn't get a chance to truly shine and prove himself over other villains they say are "mightier" and treat as eviller and smarter. They're making it seem like he's a lesser evil villain, secretly a good guy deep down, and half asses his plans because apparently he's just an incompetent idiot and because he doesn't really want to be Eggman and was just forced.
I hate how much this comic is treating him like a victim. Think about it, first through Starline changing him back into Eggman and "forcing" Tinker into this "nightmare" and then through the Deadly Six being shoved in to take over in the Metal Virus arc. As Tinker or Eggman, he gets portrayed as a poor victim to other villains they try to make look better and more evil and everyone laps it up and claims it's so true. But Eggman is smarter, stronger, and eviller than this comic wants to give him credit for because they won't even give him the chance to prove it. They'd rather act like he's too dumb to have a solid plan and even imply he doesn't even want to be evil when the games have only ever shown us nothing but the exact opposite, which is how it should be.
It seems this comic is never going to change for the better now and I'd love to be wrong but it seems hopeless. I've said that a hundred times already but somehow it manages to get even more hopeless and disappointing. I wish they'd stop dragging on this Mr. Tinker stuff and making him seem like a poor trapped victim that genuinely still exists inside Eggman instead of just merely a temporary amnesiac state of mind that doesn't reflect his true self when he doesn't remember his true identity, just like it should've stayed. They fucked it up so bad and I hate how they can't let go and try to fix what the mess they've made by making the main villain a joke, victim, and incompetent clown.
Since this was a flashback moment they better do the opposite of my fears and give me some fucked up present Eggman, though I'm probably a fool for still daring to hope. The only Belle angst I'd like is her realizing that Eggman genuinely isn't like Tinker as his real and true self and he gets to be nasty because we didn't get enough of that during their short interaction. But with them implying that deep down Tinker still exists and he doesn't really want to be Eggman, that may not happen. All I want is for them to let him actually do something evil and show the other villains why he's the boss and main bad guy of the series and actually act like it instead of him being forced and evil against his will, which has never been true and shouldn't be now.
Well written in character Eggman shouldn't be so much to ask for and I'm really sad that it is now. :(
