2. My reading list is currently 15+ books strong but today I read a bit of More Tomboy, More Bakla Than We Admit (very interesting look into the current state of Philippine LGBTIQ+ studies). But if we’re talking fiction then it would be issue 1 of (s)crawl magazine, specifically “the dead man”. It isn’t a book but if you enjoy horror, please go check it out !! Some amazing works in there

i guess a bigger example would be using a Black woman, Aunt Jemima, to market a syrup brand, though she was based on a racist stereotype so it's a bit different for that case i think?

i've seen the discussion pop up a few times but it's hard to differentiate between people of color speaking up about it, or people just wanting to start drama. an artist i know has been criticized recently because they have mostly Black characters but aren't Black themselves. the main criticism seems to just be coming from the fact that their main persona is Black, but also people are calling it fetishization and the like

I think having like, an icon online is one thing. Having an entire BRAND to me is where it gets fishy. I guess the Asian VTuber thing is like... Normal? You're all supposed to be anime girls in the 3D moving model, like we all know you don't look like that. I figured that was part of that culture. So afaik, that's different. It's not MY favorite, but I don't understand it enough to comment.

But... If everything I associated with you visually was of a Black woman, from your icon to your pause screen image to everything you design as part of your Brand, just for you to show up and be a white guy that has monetarily benefitted off of this particular Image, yeah I would find that weird. Because what inspired that choice? I'm going to question it, because it's gonna look like digital blackface if you don't have a solid explanation.

There's nothing wrong with having majority Black OCs if you're nonblack. The issue comes into play with WHY you chose and HOW you treat those characters. Just because you have a bunch of Black characters doesn't mean you actually respect Black People. Barbie Doll Wielders. You can love playing with the Black people you made up in Your Head because they're Safe and Under Your Control, but if I put you around Real Black people and you move weird? If all those Black characters are thoughtlessly designed and/or written, but you think just having them is a sign of your progressiveness? Yeah I know what you are.

You may need to learn how to set up your paints and such… but this is what people did, live, while the show aired. That’s what the show was for. I had family members create lovely works of art they enjoyed, which I still have on my walls, because William Alexander and Bob Ross both said:

SCREW METICULOUS CLASSICAL ART PRACTICES — JUST GRAB A PALETTE KNIFE AND BIG OLD BRUSH AND PAINT!

They freed a whole generation of people who were taught to paint detail and realism and exact representation of reality — people who largely gave up this kind of thing because it got tedious.

I watched the joy of family members as they rediscovered art as a messy fun spontaneous half hour activity.
