Our last day in school was March 12.
We will not return to school in this academic year.
Thoughts from Quarantine 2020
Documenting here for posterity, though it seems impossible that we would ever forget...
School has been closed since March 13. It has been one week (cue music) since I've talked to my kiddos and, with no indication that this was the plan, I am worried.
This is teacher life.
I am not excited for a break. I am not happy parents can see their kids' real struggle. I am not relishing in this sudden time for myself. I am wondering if my students are eating. I am hoping their parents are able to be home with them while also having the money to keep them home indefinitely. Are they healthy? Have they been exposed?
As my county figures this all out one day at a time, I know all I can do at this point is wait. When I inevitably start teaching via web cam (my 8 boys and me CANT WAIT), I know I will apologize for not preparing them--even though there was no I way I could. I will smile and cheer that I missed them and ask them what they've been doing. I won't care that they spent all day on a tablet or that they haven't thought about a book since school.
This is a really crazy time in the world. THE WORLD! My brain cannot grasp the enormity of this crisis, and I know my students can't either.
I hope they are behaving. I hope they are healthy and safe. I hope they are making the most of a crazy situation.
And I hope they miss me a little π
When you're really feeling September and get a 9th student and another grade level...your best teacher friend brings you a pick-me-up π
If you are able, consider helping my super students (and their tired teacher) gain access to independent work!

And week two is done!
You know that moment where it hits you just how much you've taken on? And how much of that was volunteer versus voluntold?
What I have ahead of me, in a nutshell:
-Lead Mentor
-mentor of a new teacher
-university cooperating teacher
-8 students with emotional and behavioral disabilities
-3 grade levels of curriculum
-Behavior Core Team chair
Ya know, on top of my day to day π
Week one is in the books! I definitely have my work cut out for me this year but I'm calling the first four days successful.
So far I've had four level drops π, two new students, three elopements, and one hit by a student.
Good thing I've got my sneakers on π
Year SIX starts tomorrow!
Bring on eight boys, three grades, and one spectacular instructional assistant!
Here we goooo
Back to it tomorrow! This year I have taken on the new role of Lead Mentor. This means I recruited and assigned mentors for all new staff to my school. And boy are there a bunch of new staff! Tomorrow I will be leading the new staff orientation. Leading community builders, giving a tour of the school, sharing all the school policies I can think of...questions I still ask others for myself π
Wish me luck!
"Miss Shapiro, when I grow up I'm gonna marry you!"

Part of my professional development this summer includes a children's literature course. For our assignment, we took a "shelfie"--a photo of books that represents us. I have "The First Six Weeks of School," which I have actually never read but am going to be meticulously studying because of my changing position! Also the 1-2-3-Magic book (see previous post) because it boosted my confidence that I'll be able to handle managing my own classroom. The Washington Post is a necessity because of my love-obsession with news and media. "Start Where You Are" and "52 Lists for Happiness" are self-reflection and emotional health guides. My attempt to start journaling was short-lived but these books are always on my coffee table when I need them. The last book for this particular shelfie is "Out of My Mind," which is next on my list of YA novels to widen the diversity of characters exposed to students. Happy reading!
For ESY (summer school), we have an open house to invite kiddos and their parents to meet us before we have to find them off the bus. Five of my little friends came and, once again, I have the CUTEST class!
Itβs amazing the time efficiency that experience brings. This is my fourth summer. Every year they give me the K/1 class. The first summer, I spent hours and hours making schedules and data sheets and activities. Hours. And. Hours. In year four, I got my room together in about an hour. I am planned for the entire first week. My data sheets are ready. I know what routines we are focusing on. I am ready.
Another summer training in the books! Pop quiz--what is THE most important aspect of an effective classroom? Behavior management! Especially with my population of kiddos. I learned so much good stuff about nonverbal (or limited verbal) behavior correction and have some good ideas to take with me into the fall. Tomorrow...summer school!
Ah the life of a teacher in summer. Pool parties and vacations and sleeping in...right? Of course we know that's the romanticized version of teacher life. Instead, I've filled June and July with professional learning and summer school. This month's online course is about growth mindset. Learning from mistakes. Embracing challenges. All the things I as an educator will need in abundance this year!
I am a teacher at a crossroads. I am in my last week as a learning disabilities teacher at the first school to take a chance and hire a new teacher. It has been a long four years of fighting for my students, but itβs now time for a change.
Next week, I will start summer school. I LOVE teaching ESY! We somehow cram an entire day of teaching into just three hours, send them home, and do it all over again.
In August, I begin my next adventure: emotional disabilities teacher. I fluctuate between over-the-top excited and what-was-i-thinking nervous.
What I know for sure is that the kiddos need me and I am anxious to meet them. Cheers to a new adventure!
