not quite a wip wednesday bc itβs FINISHED !!!! but if anyone would like to be tagged when my stobin mini bang fic drops tomorrow, lmk π€ itβs full of severe angst and hurt/no comfort π€πΌ
Recently, the Mod Team has noticed that Work In Progress fics haven't been getting the celebration they deserve. Readers are refusing to read unfinished works and saving their kudos until the work is completed, rather than sharing the love as the work is updated.
Fandom is built on WIPs.
An active fandom is filled with works being updated at varying frequencies. You might luck out at the right time to find a fic that updates every day like clockwork. You may find a fic that posted it's last chapter right as you went searching for a fic. You may scrounge around and find an incredible gem that hasn't been updated in two years, but gosh is it worth the read.
This is fandom. This is fanfic.
Here at Steddie Underdog Fics, our page was meant to highlight fics that were getting lost in the boom of activity in the early Steddie days. At the time, the inaugural Steddie Big Bang was posting and we were still seeing high frequencies of fic being posted daily. So many AMAZING works were getting buried by other AMAZING works! We wanted to take a pause and celebrate the fics, as they were, in the moment.
This has worked for us these last two years and we're not changing anything. The information on our fic recs reflects the time of our mods creating the post. If it's a complete or incomplete fic, we make that clear with the chapter count on the post AND it's also a column on our spreadsheet of rec'd fics.
Weβve gotten negative comments from potential readers about incomplete status on fics or whether something is worth reading for one reason or another. While we encourage positive conversation here, there is never a time to publicly criticize fanfic. Donβt like, donβt read. This is not the space for you to share negative opinions about our authors and fics. We only uplift on our page and in our community.
Any asks or comments that request the team to make these changes to indicate a fic is incomplete beyond the Ao3 standard chapter count will be ignored and deleted.
Any negative comments about the fics, whether itβs about completion status or not, you will be blocked automatically.
Everyone has reading preferences. We're not saying you have to read WIPs, just like we wouldn't say you have to read a Major Character Death fic. We as a team give you the information we have about the fic to make an informed decision on whether you'd like to read it. The rest is up to you.
We do ask, if you've never been a fanfic writer or if it's been some time, that you take a moment to put yourself in the authors shoes. Writing is a very vulnerable craft and hobby, and fanfic authors pour themselves into free works for the joy of it.
Sometimes it gets to be too much, though. Life gets in the way, health issues come up, or they just lose the drive to complete the fic. Any reason is valid. NO reason is valid. So yes, fics can be left ongoing for some time, but not necessarily by choice. You never know when a random kudos or comment on a WIP could inspire or drive an author to write ten more chapters.
In the age of AI, we implore you to remember that these are HUMANS creating these works. They are not machines creating content for you to consume.
For the month of July, we're celebrating Works In Progresses.
All of our Challenges this month will be ONLY WIP stories and we ask that you consider sharing WIPs for our theme weekends as well. Giving an ongoing fic a little love can go a long way, for both the reader and the author.
Please consider reading a WIP this month. Leave a kudos or comment. Share it with a friend. Spread the love of fic.

"It's alright," Brenner said, still smiling serenely. "You have a way to redeem yourself fully, in the eyes of God and the Church."
"What makes you think I want that anymore?" Steve asked, his expression hardening. "I amΒ doneΒ with you and I am done with the Church. You've got no right to keep me here!"
Brenner turned away, shaking his head. "That's the Devil in you, Steven. That demon has gotten inside your mind, twisted you so far from yourself you don't know who you are anymore."
"Oh, I know who I am," Steve snapped. "I've never been more clear in my life. AndΒ IΒ amΒ notΒ like you."
"You don't even know how lost you've become," Brenner said, turning to lift something up from the desk. "But it's going to be alright." He turned back, holding the object in his hands. Steve stared at it. It was a collar of some kind. "You're going to help usher in a new era of peace."
"What is that?" Steve demanded as Brenner approached. He struggled against his restraints. "No, hey, what is thatβ"
Brenner clamped the thing around his neck. Steve heard it lock. It was heavy and uncomfortable, but it didn't seem to do anything else as Brenner stepped back.
"There," the Bishop said. "Now all we need to do is wait."
"Wait?" Steve echoed, starting to feel desperate. "Wait for what?"
"For the one that did this to you," Brenner said calmly. "It will pay for what its done. And once its gone, you shall be free."
"Forβ¦" Steve's mind was racing. "For Eddie? You're waiting forΒ Eddie?"
"Gave itself a name," Andy scoffed from somewhere in the shadows.
"For their leader, yes," Brenner replied. "It will come for you. And when it does, we will send it right back where it belongs. Without their leader, the other demons will flounder and we can finally eradicate them once and for all."
Steve let out a laugh. Honestly, the whole thing was fucking ridiculous. He shook his head.
"Eddie won't come," he said. "You picked⦠the last fucking person on Earth that Eddie would want to come rescue."
"We'll see about that," Brenner said. He started to walk out, saying to the others, "Make him ready for our guest."

As a priest, Steve Harrington has been trained from a young age to hunt and exorcise demons. It's his God-given mission to protect the innocent. He thinks he knows right from wrong and good from evil until a demon saves his life. The demon insists that everything Steve's been told is a lie, but how can Steve believe him?
Demons are incapable of telling the truth, after all.

I've read and reread hotluncheddie's π (affectionate) an alarming number of times (feedism, objectification. Go check it out. It's short and so so sweet (also Tumblr let me tag feedism properly you coward))
And the moment I read Eddie's description, I thought of @otternil's 40-year-old Eddie (which, coincidentally, also inspired another fic I'm obsessed with - Set Me Free (Remotivate Me) by @angelbbywannabe)
Anyway, thank you so much Nil for taking my commission. He worked SO HARD on this piece, like did a ton of research, did pose studies, the whole shebang. It was so cool to see his process. Art under the cut because it's a tiny bit suggestive
When Eddie Munson wakes up, Hawkins is being dismantled, its people being scattered by a government desperate to bury the truth. Eddie is forced into a new life in a strange city far from everything heβs ever known. He tells himself itβs enough to survive. It has to be.
But Steve Harrington refuses to accept distance as an ending.
Haunted by guilt, grief, and a love he waited too long to name, Steve sets out across a fractured continent with Robin at his side, determined to find the people theyβve lost. A journey of reckoning. Of who they were, who theyβve become, and what it means to choose each other in a world designed to keep them apart. Love deferred, identity reclaimed, and the fragile, stubborn hope that even after everything, you can still find your way back to the people who matter most.

Excerpt:
Eddie is in a coma the first time Steve says, βI love youβ. Unconscious and unable to reply. Over the next few years, the memory will grow cloudy and unreliable. The doctors will spend a lot of time explaining that, although it can happen, itβs probable that he is not remembering the specifics of conversations. Itβs more likely that he remembers visits from familiar voices, can recall ambient sounds and comforting music. But Eddie knows for sure that isnβt what it is; he is positive that he heard the first time Steve told him that he was probably in love with him. Thatβs not something you just let slip out of your brain, even if your body remains asleep and incapable of responding. When the hottest man in Hawkins admits that heβs fallen for you, you hold onto that information, even if you canβt convince yourself to shake yourself awake and demand answers at the time.Β
Steve Harrington is a pendulum, always has been. He swings back and forth between being the boy who was not serious enough to handle much of anything, and the Harrington Heir who was way too serious about everything. Even before the Upside-Down, Eddie had known that. Over the seven years of not-quite-friendship, Eddie had learned not to predict which version he was going to get.
The secret of their association had never really bothered Eddie; being a freak in a small town prepared you well for the reality that friends you had in private didnβt always translate into the ones you had at school. Heβd genuinely liked seventh-grade Steve, from that first moment he'd shown up like an apparition to Eddie's secret forest fort behind the park.Β
The first version of Harrington heβd met had whimsy and joy etched into his bones. He made dumb jokes and thought deeply about things that the other boys would never admit to caring about. But he was also the boy that Wayne had warned Eddie about when heβd moved to Hawkins. He was A Harrington, with a capital H, and Eddie understood very early on that that designation came with many more roadblocks than money could solve. Steve is so scared of his own softness, his own fanciful soul, that he shoves it down beneath hairspray, unkindness, basketball, and flirting with the girls heβs expected to flirt with.Β
The fear takes over as they hit high school, as the stakes of being Different become more painful. Eddie had understood it, even at the time. He knew the pain of isolation intimately. His understanding came at a cost, though. When Steve stops coming around at all in the middle of his junior year, Eddieβs understanding turns to bitterness. Then, Eddie doesnβt graduate. Then, Steveβs little cronies seem to realize heβs a great target for their low-brow bullying. The longer he gets trapped in Hawkins, the harder it is for Eddie to ignore them. Suddenly, it turns him into a villain in the story of far too many people at school. He isnβt scary, not even a little bit, but he leans into the safety net the Scary Persona affords him. Leans into the asshole behaviour and the loose morals that do more harm than D&D ever has.Β
Eddie knows the truth about Steve because heβd been right beside him for years. But how many times is he, Hawkins' own impish Puck, meant to put up with the swing? How many times are they all supposed to pretend Steve hasn't hurt them all? How many times is he going to stand in a proverbial boathouse, broken bottle in his hand, and pretend Steve is just a stranger, a jock, an asshole who intimidates Eddie for fun?Β
He canβt quantify the confession, canβt get past the fact that heβs seen Steve at both his best and his worst, and canβt decide which version is sitting beside his hospital bed.Β
Is it the one from the picnic table, twelve years old and afraid of the dark? Is it the one from the third-floor menβs room, demanding free cigarettes in exchange for not letting his friends steal his bag again? Is it the sixteen-year-old whoβd push Eddie against a wall in the dark corner of his bedroom while a party raged downstairs? The one whispering that it was fine if Eddie tugged his hair a bit as his tongue found purchase along the column of his throat?Β
That memory always sparked heat in Eddieβs chest. It wasnβt the only time their hidden friendship had crossed boundaries into something else, but it was the clearest in his mind. Probably because Steveβs expensive cologne had filled his senses as nimble fingers gripped his jacket. The way Steve had whispered his name like a confession against his skin.
But Eddieβs body hadnβt obeyed as Steve spoke words that seemed essential for him to get out; he couldnβt ask when exactly this βloveβ had developed. Was it during those childhood forest adventures? After the Upside Down turned everything on its head? Or somewhere in the murky middle, when they had pretended to be nothing more than reluctant acquaintances passing in school hallways.Β
So, though he hears it, though he even fully understands, the first time Steve Harrington tries to tell Eddie Munson he loves him, Eddie decides to stay in a coma rather than sort that all out.Β
It will be a while before Steve works out how to say it again.
