Summary:
Steve Harrington hasn't booked an acting gig in months. Eddie Munson is a world-famous musician with a cult following.
When the two meet at a dingy bar in Greenpoint, New York Steve has no idea who he is. Only that he is mysterious, magnetic, and impossible not to fall for. When the machinery of fame and social media finally catches up with them, Steve begins to unravel under the weight of it all.
"So why are you here?" Steve asked, keeping his tone light, like he hadn't just told a stranger the most vulnerable parts of his week.
He leaned in a little, not in a threatening way, more conspiratorial. He smiled, like he already knew how Steve would respond.
"I'm hiding from the world," he whispered, as if it were something shameful but also kind of funny.
Steve smirked.
"Wow. The whole world?"
"Feels like it, yeah." He shrugged, his grin still present but softer now. There was a brightness to his eyes that didn't match the rest of him.
Steve shook his head slightly.
"Well, you're not doing a very good job. Because I can see you."
He tilted his head at Steve and saidā
"What if I wanted you to?"

Our anonymous nominator recommends the following works by @ahoystevee:
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
So I Will Wait (For The Next Time You Want Me)
Pushing It Down And Praying
Iām Right Where You Left Me
Old Lovers In Dressing Rooms
"Honestly theyāve just been churning out pure gold over the last 4 years. Their fics are always so unique and nothing that Iāve ever seen before. They always manage to put such an incredible spin on the romance genre that keeps it so interesting. You think you know where a stories going and then suddenly you have no idea! Or even if you /do/ have an idea, they still make it fun! I never get bored of reading them and I just think they deserve more recognition so I always try to put them forward where I can. (Iāve done it so many times across different platforms Iām worried theyāll think Iām weird so I wanna stay anonymous hehe but I love you! Please keep writing!)
Honestly their writing is just so visceral and you can honestly tell how much love and care they put into it. Theyāre always so wonderful and always respond to comments with such care and consideration. Given how much love and care they put into it I think itās only fair they get some love back. They make you feel everything so intently that sometimes Iām like am I reading a FREE piece of work or is this like a NYTimes novel literally cannot wrap my head around how talented they are. Just such good love stories Iāve read every single one of their fics and every single one is just so different which is so wild given how many steddie fics there are on ao3. If they want you to cry, theyāll make you cry. If they want you to laugh, theyāll make you laugh. If they want you to feel second hand embarrassment LORD strap in youāre gonna feel it so intensely it makes you feel icky inside but thatās just how incredible it is! Their work has made me pace around my apartment so many times and half the time if Iām in the middle of one of their fics itās all I think about at work I cannot get enough <3" -- Anonymous
Below the cut,Ā @ahoystevee answered some questions about their writing process and some of their recommended work!
Why do you write Steddie?
It was initially prompted by just having such a hankering to explore Eddie more as a character because we got such little time with him. I didnāt actually start out writing Steddie, I wrote things that were a little more Eddie-centric back in 2022 when we first saw him. I was just completely enamoured by him from the off. Iāve always loved Steve as a character and whilst we get so much more time with him and we know him on a deeper level, there were still so many more things that I was so intrigued about that we didnāt get to see on-screen. I definitely didnāt jump on the Steddie bandwagon right away, but the more I started to see of them, the more it clicked in my head that as a pairing, they make so much sense. It just awoke something inside of me. I hadnāt written fanfiction about anyone or anything since I was around 12/13 so to then be so engrossed by something again in 2022 at the ripe old age of 23 it was just so invigorating and healing. I had lost so much of my creative output and desires over the years from just working consistently throughout my early 20ās, that it just gave me a new lease of life in terms of storytelling. I am a huge lover of unconventional things. Doesnāt matter what it is, if itās a little peculiar and would turn some heads if you saw it walking down the street Iām all over it like a rash. I love Eddie because he is just so inherently, outwardly shameless in his interests, his opinions, his morals. He can be so jarring and standoffish but at the same time heās quite mawkish. He is such a wonderfully layered and complex character in terms of his upbringing, his family, his home-life with Wayne. Who he actually is vs the parts of himself he actually allows people to see or rather forces on other people out of a need to protect himself and his values was so appealing to me. Same with Steve, I think just by looking at him appearance wise you would assume that he is someone you would naturally be intimidated by. I think he and Steve are one in the same and have a lot of overarching histories, traumas, experiences especially with family and friends. Theyāre definitely cut from the same cloth and I just needed to explore that more.
Whatās your favorite trope to READ?
I love tropes that are a little bit gritty and fueled by tension and unresolved feelings and patterns in peopleās lives. Enemies-to-lovers has always been a personal favourite of mine, for that very reason. Even though itās a pretty basic one, you can cram so much inside of it and I think for me thereās a much greater payoff in that than something like friends-to-lovers because you get to see them putting in the work and seeing those walls come down to make room for more vulnerability is so satisfying.
Whatās your favorite trope to WRITE?
Similarly to what I enjoy reading, my favourite trope to write is usually some depiction of enemies-to-lovers but I like giving myself room to add more strings to that bow. Sometimes Iām too much of a softy to make them fully enemies so itās usually pretty one sided. If itās layered with tropes like grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, the whole āwe canāt be together because Iām damaged goodsā stuff or one of them has commitment issues because of past trauma? Chefs kiss. Iām also partial to a good love triangle and returning to their hometowns after a stint in the big city.
Is there a trope youāre excited to explore in a future work but havenāt yet?
I think Iāve covered a lot of basis within my fics with various tropes that I enjoy, but Iād really like to maybe expand on them a little bit more because a lot of the time theyāre usually sprinkled in throughout rather than as a single focal point. Iād love to maybe do like a childhood sweethearts, fic. Maybe a fun little Vegas wedding/marriage before romance thing. Iād definitely like to explore more fun fics/concepts as usually I write a lot of heavy angst.
Are there any memorable Steddie collaborations (art, writing, podfic, etc.) you've done or would like to do?
I havenāt collaborated with anyone on anything as of yet, but Iām definitely open to the idea. Iām very bad at putting myself out there and usually just keep to myself lmao, like some kind of fic writing enigma, but if you ever want to collab, hit me up!
What is your writing process like?
My writing process has been described by friends as, frankly, ādiabolical.ā I get a lot of my ideas from media Iāve consumed like films, TV shows, music etc. I donāt typically write down any notes, I donāt usually plan or outline my chapters to keep me on track. A lot of the time I have absolutely no idea where itās going to go or how itās going to end. I only really know what the main crux of the story is but I rarely ever have a vehicle for how Iām going to land the plane. I find if I plan too much it can be quite limiting. Youāll see a lot of big writers/authors out there explain their writing process and theyāll say how they write things out on post-it notes and pin them to the walls, make storyboards, know everything thatās going to happen in the story down to a T. If it works for you, it works for you but honestly I donāt bother with any of that stuff. A lot of scenes and conversations will come to me when Iām doing something random and Iāll whip out my phone and jot down a couple of key words to make sure I donāt forget. But otherwise I just sit there and write whatever comes into my head. Music is definitely a fantastic tool if you have a vibrant imagination. I can usually partner songs with specific scenes or feelings that I want to explore in that moment and it helps drive the conversations.
What writing tools do you use, if any? For example, do you participate in community writing events like sprints or prompts, or have a favorite writing program aid like Scrivener?
Once again, what Iām going to say is probably also diabolical but I write on the Wattpad app. Vintage, I know. I still have my old account from back in the day and I just head over there. I havenāt ever used another writing tool or app. Iāve dabbled with Google docs but it just doesnāt feel right to me because I only ever write on my phone. Wattpad is my olā reliable. I like the font size, I like how smooth it feels, I like how simple it is. Iāve been told this is weird, but whatever. If it aināt broke, donāt fix it.
Do you have any writing quirks?
Iām not sure if this constitutes as a quirk but I start out by writing the dialogue first. I write and edit a lot of scripts, so I find it much easier to just write out all of the dialogue within the scene so as not to get too bogged down with surroundings, describing their body language, how theyāre feeling, their internal monologue, etc. I already have a pretty vague idea of those things but having to write dialogue and action makes me lose momentum. Reading it back makes it much more fluid in my head and the visuals come to me more naturally as opposed to when Iām really thinking about how theyāre acting in the moment. Plus when you only have dialogue to read youāre able to see more easily if the tone works or if their responses make sense.
Do you prefer posting when youāve finished writing or on a schedule?
unfortunately do not have a schedule but I do just tend to post chapters as theyāre written. Sometimes Iāll write two before posting just as a nice little hook so people can get an idea on whether or not this is a story they actually want to read. Usually I aim to post once a week, maybe twice if I have more free time outside of work. I know a lot of my readers prefer to wait to read the whole work which is fine. I have such a crippling fear of keeping people waiting so sometimes I just maniacally post whenever I can. Never let them know your next move, and all that.
Which fic are you most proud of?
Iām definitely most proud of Pushing It Down and Praying, I think. Itās not one of my most popular ones but it definitely had a good reception and I think in terms of storytelling it was the most unique one I had ever done that wasnāt based on anything in particular like a movie or a show. Iām actually working on turning it into a novel (with lots of major changes made) so who knows!
What's a funny or interesting or completely wild research topic you've dug into as a result of writing Steddie?
When writing my series āI Despise My Rotten Mind (And How Much It Worships You), I actually set it a little later on in 1990 but still set in Indiana. One of the major plot points was Steve becoming more involved in the LGBTQ+ community after meeting and living with Eddie and coincidentally that was the same year that Indianapolis held itās first outdoor pride parade āCelebration On The Circleā which was held on June 30th 1990. It felt really kismet so of course I had to include it. The initial gathering in 1990 drew around 3,000 - 5,000 people and was located at the monument circle and it was a really pivotal moment because people mainly tended to have pride parties indoors so as not to be met with any protestors or violence. COTC was, of course, met with a lot of protestors due to the presence of AIDS activists but they didnāt run away. They then went on to have their first parade in 2002/2003 and thus began the inaugural Indy pride parade. How cute!
How did you get the idea for Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap?
DDDDC happened as a result of me rewatching a lot of high school/teen comedy classics one night. I watched Mean Girls and Easy A back to back among others and I just immediately thought to myself how can I steddie-fy this situation, so I combined the two. It was really, really well received and I think was a pivotal moment in terms of realising I can actually write fun teen comedies so I had an absolute blast.
When writing Pushing It Down And Praying, what was something you didnāt expect?
I honestly just didnāt expect such a keen emotional response from readers and also myself. It was such a beautiful story (not to toot my own flute) and I take such big pride in it. The comments I got were just so completely overwhelming in terms of how it had affected people and their emotional attachment to the story. I genuinely think I cried writing the last chapter so I kinda canāt be too surprised by everyone else crying too. I had a lot of people say that they would buy it as a novel away from AO3 which gave me the kick up the ass I needed to adapt it and make changes and put it out into the world.
What inspired So I Will Wait (For The Next Time You Want Me)?
Just my total and utter perplexion at the idea of situationships and why, we as people, do it to ourselves. I was in such a rotten situationship with a man who truly did not care if I lived or died for a good year of my life. And I see so many people talk about their situationships on social media and I just think to myself what are we doing!!! Just the endless back and forth of wanting to be wanted so badly and to just feel it for maybe a night or a few minutes and that being enough of a reason for you to keep going back for more is soo devastating. Like just the concept of it is absolutely gut wrenching. Iād always wanted to do something with flashbacks and a non-linear timeline so I combined it all and put Steve through the absolute trenches but itās fine because he got his happy ending in the end.
What was your favorite part to write from So I Will Wait (For The Next Time You Want Me)?
Definitely the dinner scene. Itās a favourite among my readers as well. I wanted to do something so outrageous that just reeks of second-hand embarrassment for everyone involved. And of course, everyone was wondering how everyone else would find out about the fact Steve and Eddie had been sleeping together for five whole years. So I just went all out and curated an absolute cluster fuck of mass proportions that nobody would see coming because thereās literally zero dramatic build-up. Eddie just drops it in there and waits for it all to explode. I love you bitchy, nonchalant Eddie.
How do/did you feel writing Iām Right Where You Left Me?
Like a woman, possessed honestly. It was only meant to be two chapters and then just evolved into this multi chapter series exploring the dark underbelly of like the Harringtonās social impacts on the town due to their status/money at the time and Steveās mum just being an absolute witch. The evolution of it was inspired by me just binge watching Sirenās on Netflix and I based Steveās mum on Julianne Mooreās character and her just blackmailing Eddie. It was so, so fun to write.
What was the most difficult part of writing Old Lovers In Dressing Rooms?
Just, like, the concept of fame and being a famous person and all of these never-ending commitments and responsibilities. I knew from the off I really wanted to explore how social media can be so detrimental to peopleās lives when theyāre dating/are associated with a celebrity and how things just spiral out of control and how awful and isolating that must feel. But it was really difficult because it was something I, myself, had never experienced before. So I really had to put a lot of time and research into it and read a lot of gossip pages/reddit threads/think-pieces to really get into the mindset of why the fuck does it bother you so much and all the parasocial elements of it.
Do you have a favorite scene and/or line from any of your fics?
I think the party scene with Eddie and Jonathan in āDirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheapā when theyāre trying to make sure Tommy doesnāt beat the absolute shit out of Steve is my favourite. Their dynamic was already so fun to write but just putting them in a totally ridiculous situation like that was just the icing on the cake. I made myself laugh a lot with that one. Specifically the lines: āYou didnāt think to check outside?ā Jonathan stumbles back a step, throws his arms up defensively. āI didnāt know that was my jurisdiction!ā āWhat does that even mean? Itās downstairs, is it not?ā āFights donāt start outside, Eddie. They start inside and go outside! Those are the rules! Thatās how it goes!ā
Do you have any upcoming projects or fics youād like to share/promote?
I have just written an AU - Afterlife fic inspired by the film āEternityā called āYou Can Be Free (And Still Come Home) which is a very big change for me as usually I donāt tend to write fantasy stuff (I donāt even really write much UD stuff.) And Iām currently writing a musician x Eddie fic called āBite The Handā where heās been in and out of rehab due to drug addiction and Steve is assigned to be his assistant which I am loving so far!
Outside of these questions, Is there anything YOU would like to add?
I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has ever engaged with my work in any way. Be it just leaving a kudos, subscribing, leaving wonderful comments and just generally being amazing people. Itās been so lovely connecting with you all for the last couple of years and to see so much excitement and interest in my writing. I didnāt think much of my writing capabilities but you guys really just propelled me forward and in that time Iāve written and directed a film, Iām working on another one now and Iām working on a book. So thank you for giving me the confidence to keep writing. Mwah x

Eddie Munson was prepared to spend the last stretch of summer aloneāplaying records in his room, biking through heat-hazed backroads, letting the long days pass untouched. Until Steve Harrington called.
In the quiet vacuum of suburban heat; amidst cheap beer, lazy afternoons, and flickering VHS tapes, the two boys circle each other carefully. Clumsily, suspended between friendship and the quiet, electric possibility of something more. As Steve draws Eddie into his worldāhis silence, his contradictions, his need to feel something he canāt nameāEddie finds himself both transfixed and untethered.
"You been thinking about it?"
Steve's voice was sudden but careful.
"Thinking about what?"
Eddie kept his eyes on the pizza box he was folding. For a moment, Steve said nothing.
"Oh. Your game."
"Yeah. Obviously." He exhaled.
"Same."
Steve's reply was almost bashful.
"Kinda feels like I've been thinking about it all day."
Eddie nodded, tossed the box into a bag. Tried to act like that wasn't something.
"You wannaādo something again?ā

"I'm hiding from the world," he whispered, as if it were something shameful but also kind of funny.
Steve smirked.
"Wow. The whole world?"
"Feels like it, yeah." He shrugged, his grin still present but softer now. There was a brightness to his eyes that didn't match the rest of him.
Steve shook his head slightly.
"Well, you're not doing a very good job. Because I can see you."
