i'll preface this by saying i'm not black so take my opinions with several tablespoons of salt but when i think back to s1 it sort of feels like the writers decided to make collins's whole storyline revolve around children and motherhood and then... had no idea how to write for the character they created. when you actually look at the cases there is shockingly little exploration of what it would mean to collins to have children and be a black mother in particular. she gets cases that are, like: this patient's balls are fucked. also he has a mom š like the mere fact that a black mother is present is treated as sufficient material to explore collins's themes as a character and it's like oh lol. so you guys literally did just view her as a wannabe mom and then stopped there. you had a whole iceberg and you gave us an ice cube.
i saw a clip from an interview keke palmer did recently where she was talking about her thoughts as she raises a black child knowing she will have to talk to him about race... and here's this show that prides itself on showing the gritty realities of racism and police brutality, but when it comes to collins and motherhood the bottom line is just that she suffers. no thought is given to her internal world or her agency in choosing to have childrenāwhy she wants children, what specific fears she has or what joys she looks forward to as a mother, or even just what her own relationship with parental figures has been like.
and it puts a bad taste in my mouth that motherhood to the writers is just Maternal Love. The Maternal Instinct. when women have babies, the baby makes All The Pain Worth It. Women Want to Be Mothers Because Motherhood. with no afterthought for the fact that motherhood is a choice, and that a lot of women who are mothers don't get to just drift in a raceless cloud of love for their family after the process of childbirth is over.. like for racialized women motherhood actually becomes a very charged balancing act of decision-making and negotiation between yourself and your child and the world and it's just as much about your skills with diplomacy and problem-solving and history/sociology as it is about ""natural"" maternal love..... and it's also very political... it just felt like very reductive and colorblind writing idk

thinking about how heather collins has wanted a baby for years, but never was able to. thinking about how she moved back home to start a family, and we didn't get to hear anything about how she's doing besides one throwaway sentence. thinking about how this season was all about a little baby and how heather would have been the perfect choice for kinship adoption, how her dream could have been fulfulled while she gives an abandoned baby a new and safe home. thinking about the story we could have had about her reckoning with the fact that this is probably the one shot she has. thinking about how it has only been 4 days since her residency was officially over, and right then and there a baby falls into the hands of the ed, right out of her reach. how cassie or dana probably are in contact with her and will text her about their 4th of july shift. how she knows she'll be adopting in oregon but that she'll know that baby doesn't have a home yet. about how we could have such juicy storylines with her journey about fertility and motherhood. sigh. healther collins i miss you
This would have been the perfect story for her š„ŗ

Oh, the dreams of what could have been š„¹ I'm definitely going to have to write this for Robby and Collins one day soon.
i so wish the writers took advantage of collins leaving and how her absence and her choosing to leave the pitt haunts robby, causing him to spiral
They just find new ways to break my heart š
