The structure consisted a roughly 40 kilometer shaft approximately 300 meters in diameter bored into the planet, with metallic rings lining the shaft at 20 meter intervals. At the bottom of the shaft was an operations center, with living quarters, command & control center, storage, and an access tunnel to a docking bay on another hemisphere of the moon, accessed by a tram that was in largely pristine condition. The interior had Earth-like atmosphere and gravity, though no gravity differences were reported or measured on the surface. All of the computer systems were still in operational order, likely running in low power mode and cycling into full power occasionally for maintenance, calibration, and diagnostic purposes, though this was yet to be confirmed. Power source was presently unknown. On the other side of the shaft, accessible from the interior by an air-locked maintenance tunnel, was a storage depot containing massive, solid metal cylinders, each one about 10 meters in diameter and 120 meters long, each of them stored upright in a rectangular rack. There was a very precise crane system inside, which appeared to be configured to grab onto the cylinders through the corners of the rack. The rail the crane was mounted on led through an opening that led to the shaft which the survey team had initially missed. One of the racks was empty.

The reason for the the strange inventory and distribution system was confounding. The expedition had their suspicions of course, but such a theory seemed absurd. Though the evidence was compelling. The long shaft. The rings along the shaft. The metal rods. The distribution system for the rods, and where it led to....

Once they analyzed one of the rings, their suspicions were confirmed....

and i think its because i imagine celine spent a lot of rumi’s childhood focusing on her own shortcomings as a parent. any mistake she made (or even just felt she made) became a theoretical point of comparison for how miyeong would’ve done in her place (or poppy, or even rumi’s father, though she never met him). even before the idol awards, she can’t help but feel like she failed rumi as a parent.

and then the idol awards happen, and it’s like every insecurity about her parenting is amplified times 10. her own child came to her to beg for death. to be put down like a wild animal. as though she expected celine would agree to do it.

she did worse than fail her as a parent. she made her believe herself to be a monster.

it takes months to recover their relationship to something salvageable, and years to believe rumi would ever actually want their relationship as mother and child to flourish.

and then rumi becomes a mother herself. celine becomes a grandmother.

she makes sure to do better by her grandchildren than she did by their mother.

her daughter certainly has been doing that for them. celine sees her and her wives doing things for their children that celine was too foolish to do herself, like kissing their patterns and telling them their patterns are beautiful, encouraging them to not fear or or hide or want to rid themselves of this part of them.

it makes her feel hopeful. it makes her happy. the pain she caused her own daughter will not be continued to the next generation. it shouldn’t have been caused in the first place, of course, but it’s good that it won’t be perpetuated.

there’s also things she sees that are all too familiar.

the teddy bears being kissed.

the games they used to play.

the lullaby she used to sing her.

the story she told her a few times, but never wrote down, somehow fully memorized all these years later.

the way she used to convince her to eat foods she didn’t want to eat

and many more

all of it, all these years later. rumi has remembered it all. and now, amidst all the ways her parenting has differed from celine’s, she kept these the same.

it doesn’t make the way she raised rumi right. it doesn’t fix all the hurt she caused her. it doesn’t undo all of her failures.

The story is dedicated to Benjamin Clawhauser and Gazelle. Events begin with an anonymous tip claiming that the famous pop star, Gazelle, is being stalked. A stalker of sorts. Her agent is concerned. And her trusted friends, or rather, her brothers, the tiger dancers, are even more terrified. After all, their intentions are unknown. What if he does something terrible? At first, they considered going straight to the police. But then he'll go into hiding, and when things calm down, he'll return. So what to do? While they were discussing this, Gazelle's agent brought up a contest where the grand prize is a dinner at an expensive restaurant. Note: the winner will dine with the singer herself. And then, the tigers had an idea, and they announced their plan.

Free weights scattered around the area, junk food wrappers discarded next to protein shakes and leaning towers of fast-food cartons. Clothes in various stages of cleanliness scattered across all surfaces, even vertical ones…

“How is that shirt staying stuck to the wall?”

Four sets of eyes turned to look at where she was gesturing with her bottle. Turning back to the ungulate four sets of tiger shoulders shrugged.

Gazelle watched as one of her long-time friends walked over clad in nothing but a loose pair of basketball shorts. Smiling she held her arms out for hug, Leon always gave the best hugs. Feeling the large and smoothly muscled form of the feline impact her and sweep her off her feet Gazelle laughed as she was swung from side to side. Nuzzling into the warm fur and hard muscles for a bit Gazelle sighed as she was placed back on her feet, though she didn’t let go of the big hug bug.

“I’m frustrated Leo, every song I come up with sounds like my last three. Every new show I think of feels like a re-make of the one before the last and our fans deserve better than that.”

The purr she felt rumble through her made her smile, it was like hugging a big furry rumbling pillow…

“Oh mi amore, I never get tired of you calling them our fans and not your fans. They come to enjoy your music, your voice…my brothers and I just dance to your music.”

So saying the large tiger began to drag and swing the smaller ungulate around into an exaggerated ballroom dance as his high-school friend giggled and laughed. Feeling herself be set down she began to move along with the large feline, closing her eyes Gazelle let her mind begin to wander as she moved with the old and familiar movements. Memories of the old days began to flow through her mind…

Memories of celebrating with her boys as they made the top of the charts, memories of popping cheap champagne as they made the charts in the first place, memories of taking every venue they could book and sleeping in a large pile in their van since they couldn’t afford a permanent residence…memories of singing in her parent’s garage and her bedroom or in the choir at school.

“I…think…” She started slowly as she tried to work through her thoughts.

“I think I need to take a break…” Slowing to a stop she looked up at the amused and slightly confused expression on Leon’s face.

“Take a break?”

“Yeah…I think I need a vacation, I need to get back to where I came from and remember why and how I got where I am.”

Leon smiled as he threw the pop star into a ballroom spin with a laugh before pulling her back and tossing her at his brothers as they turned to see what the commotion was.

“AACKK!”

Gazelle couldn’t help but laugh with nerves and excitement as she was caught by a net of large paws and strong arms before being lowered into a pile of purring and laughing stripped forms. Squirming and laughing as she was tickled and tossed around Gazelle soon enough found herself laying on top of a pile of tigers. Reaching down she absently stroked her hoof over Sean’s ears and smiled as his purring grew deeper. Jerking slightly at a notification from her phone she tapped Antonio who flicked Robert’s ear who then reached over to the table with Gazelle’s phone and began to pass it back to her, the tiger’s moving with the fluidity and ease of long practice. Smiling as her phone was passed from one tiger to the next until it was passed to her Gazelle smiled even wider as she saw who the notification was from.

“I got a text from Giselle!”

Gazelle smiled as she sat at the café waiting for her older sister. Without her usual makeup, outfits and entourage she was able to pass as nothing more than an enthusiastic fan that was lucky enough to look surprisingly like the famous pop-star. Seeing her big sister walking up in the crowd she hopped to her feet and rushed forward for a hug.

Dressed in a knee length sundress and big floppy farmers hat with her hair twisted into a long braid draped over her shoulder she didn’t so much stand out as blend into the usual crowd. Laughing and shaking each other both ungulates stepped back and wordlessly extended their hooves for a shake, then tapped their feet together, clapped their hooves around each other’s and knocked their antlers together before sitting down and laughing…the complex Super-secret-sister-shake now complete.

“So then Gizzy, you have been gone for a long time and are now back in civilization!” Gazelle said after they ordered their drinks.

“What are your plans?”

Giselle smiled at her younger sister, she had always been the more energetic one.

“First things first, shower and food. After that probably hit up some clubs and indulge a bit in the city life before heading back to my quiet life in the country, how about you Gaz?”

Gazelle leaned back with a groan and rubbed the bridge of her nose before answering.

“I feel like I am butting my head against a brick wall, the songs are running together to much and the shows are nothing but repeats. I need a vacation and a shot of inspiration on the rocks…”

Giselle smiled at her baby sister, she was always her harshest critic and often had to be brought back to reality when she began to hold herself to impossible standards. Reaching out and gripping her sister’s hoof she smiled as the other gazelle looked at her in childish pouting frustration.

“Come home with me, come back to the countryside and get some clean air. We can go swimming in the river like we used to, you can help me harvest and tend to the crops a bit. We have a greenhouse set up that you would love and besides, mom and dad would be tickled pink to see you again.”

Gazelle had to admit the idea had a certain appeal to it, she hadn’t been home for years and while she had seen her parents in that time, it had been when they had come to her concerts and award ceremonies…she hadn’t been home to see them.

Memories of swimming in the river and diving for pretty rocks with her sister began to roll across her mind’s eye…walking along the rows of veggies looking for weeds and tending to her father’s herb garden alongside him…reaching out of her sleeping bag on a clear and warm night to pluck berries from a bush as she gazed at the stars…

“I don’t suppose…I could bring my boys with me if I said yes…could I?” So asking she hid her nervous expression behind her coffee mug.

“Hmm…you mean in order to get our wayward popstar back out where sanity reigns supreme, we have to let four well-muscled, well mannered, tigers with sexy muscles tag along with you…boy, you drive a hard bargain sis.”

Gazelle rolled her eyes and flicked some foam off her drink at her sister.

“The boys would love to go back home and see you, they don’t let on as much as I do but they are getting burnt out as well. I think a trip back to the countryside would do us all some good.”

“Wonderful, so head back grab some stuff and let’s head out.” Giselle said with a smile. Gazelle rolled her eyes before taking a deep sip of her latte.

“As much as I enjoy the perks, parties and concerts of my current life it isn’t so easy as that. Getting to sing in front of massive crowds and give people something to enjoy for a few hours is nice but I do miss being able to control my own schedule as much as I used to. No…I have to inform our agent, there will be appointments to cancel and re-schedule as well as I am sure some kind of TV appearance we will have to attend. We will have to do our best to head off any rumors before they start or at least make the tabloids work for their headlines.”

Giselle raised a brow at hearing this, anytime she wanted to go somewhere she just…did. She would let her parents know where she was going so they didn’t worry and so they would have an idea of when to expect her back but she never had to make a full production out of going anywhere.

“Can’t you just, you know…leave?” Gazelle scoffed good naturedly.

“I wish…if we did that, the rumor mill would go into full production and before the end of the day I would be pregnant and the father would be one of the boys despite all scientific evidence to such an impossibility.”

Sipping her drink again Gazelle scratched the base of one horn in frustration.

“Five people would have seen me leave despite evidence showing they were in a different district at the time and ten would say that I personally entrusted them with my location. By breakfast I would have been seen checking into a drug rehab facility and by lunch that day I would be modeling new fashion lines in a country no one has heard of. No…as irritating as it is, if I am to have an actual vacation it must be done the right way, no matter how much I wish I could just disappear some days.”

Giselle shook her head before taking a sip of her own drink.

“Better you than me sis.”

“And last but not least, we have with us live in the studio today the one, the only, the myth, the legend…Gazelle!” Peter moosbridge said with a smile as the camera panned to the side showing Gazelle giggling into a mug of coffee.

“Your timing is horrible! You just had to do that when I was taking a sip.”

Fabienne Growley snickered before clearing her throat.

*ahem* “Anyway, you have a bit of an announcement for your fans?”

Gazelle ran her hoof through her hair a bit and smiled into the camera.

“Yes, I have consulted with my fellow performers, my agent and all others involved and we have come to the conclusion that in order to deliver the kind of experience that our fans deserve, we must take some time to ourselves. As such we are going to finish our last concert and then we will be taking some time to ourselves and will not be in the public eye for the foreseeable future.”

“So it isn’t that you are leaving music, you are simply taking a break.” Peter asked.

“Yes, we all want to give the greatest performance possible to our fans and in order to do so…we must take some time to ourselves. We must take time to ourselves so that we can approach our next performance with the level of passion that our fans deserve.”

“And I believe I speak for many of us, we look forward to that next performance and wish all of you the very best. Now when we return after this commercial break we will be asking, ‘Is bleach really all that it is cracked up to be?’ all that and more to come.”

Receiving the signal that the cameras were no longer rolling Fabienne slumped and rubbed her temples before turning to Gazelle. Reaching out and placing her paw on the pop star’s hoof she smiled.

“Off the record, you are doing the right thing. Take the time you need and either return stronger than ever or exit the scene gracefully on a high note.” Standing up and walking away Fabienne was stopped as Gazelle called out to her.

“What, what do you mean by exiting gracefully?” Fabienne turned and smiled sadly with a shrug.

“I have two girls at home, they love you and your music. Before you they loved another music star…he painted the ceiling with his brains and I was the one that had to tell my girls their favorite artist wasn’t going to be making music again because he let his passion become his job and his job killed him. Try to let your music be what you are remembered for and not how you stopped making it.”
