My character for a Fable/Storybook D&D One-Shot
A few weeks ago I played another One-Shot set within the campaign that I'm playing in; this time 5 to 10 years before actual events. The story was presented as a fable being told to children, and this was the character I chose to play as: Akimi Haz’kam “The Foreigner”, an Aasimar veteran turned hermit, Hunter Conclave Ranger.
Akimi Haz'kam grew up in the foreign Kingdom of Temura; a devout follower of Horosha, Lord of Conquest. Raised on the Cantos of Horosha, Akimi grew up believing that strength, discipline, and conquest were sacred duties. Other cultures were not to be hated, but corrected and brought into alignment with the world's true purpose: that all peoples, cultures, and nations might one day stand united beneath a single harmonious, divine order.
Like his parents before him, and their parents before them, Akimi dedicated himself to conquering his perceived weaknesses in service to Horosha's will. When Temura launched its invasion of Den, he answered the call without hesitation, serving as a scout among the invading forces. He crossed the sea convinced he was taking part in a righteous undertaking.
Then, the conquest failed.
Separated from the retreating forces while on a forward scouting mission in Yún, Akimi found himself taking refuge in the remote Haru Valley. Certain that the Temujai would one day return to finish what they had started, he chose to remain and await new orders. Weeks became months, months became years, and years became decades. The orders never came.
Still viewed by many as a foreigner and by some with lingering distrust, Akimi settled on the outskirts of the valley, keeping largely to himself. There, he devoted his time to learning the land. He mapped its trails, explored its forests, and hunted its game, until few in Haru knew the surrounding wilderness better than he.
And as the years passed, his presence became a familiar one. When dangerous beasts threatened livestock or travelers, Akimi was often the first to track them. When winters proved harsh, he supplemented the valley's stores with game from the surrounding wilderness. Though Akimi never abandoned his pride in his Temujai heritage, and some never looked past it, others came to know him as a reserved yet dependable hunter, guide, and something of a guardian of the valley.
