My favorite part of Catching Fire is when Johanna and Finnick find each other in the arena and they act like sixteen year old girls who just ran into their #1 bitch in the high school hallway.

*clutches fist* I just … the impact of the two children cannot be overstated … a girl and a boy, in some ways representative of all the girls and boys lost to the Games before their time … the way they are a noted synthesis of their parents’ features, the marriage of Seam and town, and the culmination of many other characters of the series with these same distinct features … the way they are described as dancing … and chubby … when their parents starved and fought … these little ones get to play … and be so well fed their mother calls attention to the healthy fat her toddler has … how Katniss and Peeta intend to teach their children how to be brave and intend to show them the good things people can do … but this isn’t something they’ll learn on their own by the harsh experience of cruelty and loss … their parents are loving and gentle and will guide them in ways their own parents could not or did not … these babies who are free to take Maude Ivory’s lullaby for granted … babies who have a father who wanted them so much, and have a mother who felt a joy so strong it tamed her most primal fears when she held them … her children … given epithets like their father … unaware of the fact that they walk on a graveyard … but also unaware, like their mother is, that a songbird and snake once walked here, and that with their existence, the legacy of the songbird’s nearly prophetic music has come to fruition and the snake is crushed … *help*

movie-onlies underestimate how much crack cocaine is canonically stashed on the hail mary in the book. Which is to say. A non zero amount. That is never once addressed after having been established as being present. There is also a gun, which never comes up either. Chekov’s gun (never fired). And. The lesser known iteration. I was thinking about Katniss and Peeta preparing to eat the berries back-to-back again, and yes yes yes it was about trust, they didn’t have to look at each other to hold each other accountable to their pact, but it also shows that neither of them cared if the other carried it through. Both of them were willing to die for the other to go home if the other decided to not eat the berries. Being back-to-back was also about how they still wanted the other to live while they died. But ultimately their trust was not misplaced because both of them took the gamble and had to spit the berries out. Also, imo, back-to-back was more defiant. It was, as Peeta said, about holding the berries out so everyone could see.

Wait ok now I have to expand on Peeta’s defiance here, because he spends the entire Games trying to keep Katniss alive. His strategy is always to ensure Katniss’s survival. But then, at the very end, he’s willing to die in a double suicide with her to stick it to the Capitol. Yes he loves Katniss, yes all of his rebellion was built on his love for her, because love in itself is defiant, but it’s also bigger than that!! He wanted to be more than a piece in their Games and his way of doing that was to play for Katniss’s life. But then, in the end, both of them defied the Capitol because neither were willing to leave the arena without the other, because they weren’t willing to play by the Capitol’s rules.

I would like to add to St. Lawrence's execution the reason why he was being executed in the first place. The Emperor demanded all the treasures of the church, so Lawrence rounds up a bunch of Widows, Orphans, Disabled, and other destitute people and says "these are the treasures of the church" and the emperor got so mad he had him grilled alive.

nothing brings me more peace than knowing that katniss everdeen spends the rest of her life eating warm cheese buns and being held every night by a man who loves her more than life itself. she deserves everything

I think the funniest dynamic for arranged-marriage royalty would be a queen who came here 100% prepared to murder her future husband and rule as a widow queen in her own right, only to discover that the king is autistic as hell and responds to her wish to rule with "oh thank god please do, I don't want to be bothered by these people. I can just tell them to go bother you instead, if you really want that. I've got beetles I wanted to study."

Also, the beetles are intended to attack and kill a certain type of invasive worm that has been killing off the gourd and potato crops for decades. He’s been trying since he was a child to crossbreed several native species to be hardier and better diggers.
