Oh hey... been awhile!
Bushes are static but the covering of the character with the leaves flying gives the illusion of depth/life to the action.
Snare-riff + timpani + dramatic melody = time-honored way to build #tension
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!
Really tried to find the source on this one but couldn’t find it :( I did find a tumblr with a bunch of these really good animations tho: http://spongebobnetwork.tumblr.com/
Been meaning to post some Fara updates. Been a while~!
Evolution of Fara. Great show of idle and death animations, as well as the progress made on Fara’s design. The reaction of the hair and the cape really sell it.

Lord Hector critical attack from Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword (Just ‘Fire Emblem” in the states). The anticipation from the jump, the splash, and the screenshake really sell the deft of the hit.
This game is basically pixel art animation master class. What I would have given for Fire Emblem: Heroes (which I am enjoying!) to have these animations!
Great #Tension track from Secret of Mana by Hiroki Kikuta. Plays during boss battles.
Cool little Reddit AMA with Kikuta a few years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamemusic/comments/1yr673/ama_im_hiroki_kikuta_the_composer_for_the_secret/
Music reference
As this blog is mainly intended as a reference for myself, I’ve struggled with how I want to categorize music. I’ve thought about going really technical and pointing out different uses of musical devices and composition techniques, or maybe taking a more holistic approach. I consider myself a musician long before I consider myself a gamedev, so this area is of special interest to me.
I’ve decided to divide up all music into categories based around the emotions they convey. I know this is inadequate to describe all the ways in which good music does its job, but sometimes it’s better to work within a consumable framework than to be completely exhaustive.
Here are the categories:
Playful: meant to evoke a feeling of safety, knowing that you can make mistakes and have fun. Also, meme music.

Adventure: the feeling of setting out for a grand world unknown. This is perhaps the broadest of the categories. A sense of scale.
Meditative: music meant to bring important memories or thoughts to your mind. It calms the player.
Unsettling: music intended to scare or creep you out.
Anticipation: the feeling of knowing that there is something ahead.
Tension: The push and pull of battle. The future will be decided in this moment. Boss Battle MUSAK.
Resolution: the tension is lifted. All is well. Roll Credits…

The Boar dance from Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery by @capygames and some of the victory dances from Kirby.
Both great storytelling about their characters!
More complicated flag tech than the 3-frame Kirby one:
1) Lontano Villa from Bravely Default - looks like the flags are flat images whose sprite is bended (a word probs) with a function (looks like sine wave with little bit of squash/stretch).
2) Northern Area from Hyper Light Drifter - can’t tell if behavior is random or just LOTS of animation frames. Either way, movement feels unscripted which gives the illusion of a living, breathing, windy world.
Bamboo EP by @sokpopco
Really great pop to this game. Leaves, ULTRA BAMBOO PARALLAX DX, wavy text, wooshy grass all make it feel alive and playful. Camera work is also very good, keeping the player in view, but not centered and rigid.
Horses in Sunset Riders (Arcade)
LOTR: The Two Towers by EA.
Do a quick input after a block to do a parry kill-move. Motion-captured animations and everything stops so you can appreciate it (and not get hit).

Three-frame flag animation from Kirby’s Adventure on NES.
Plague Doctor from recent Shovel Knight update.
You really feel the weighty-ness of the toss and the smoke looks great.
