Exactly — that Alan Watts line is one of those deceptively simple sentences that sums up the whole systems view of life. You’re not a foreign visitor on the planet; you’re a local pattern of the planet. The same thermodynamic gradients that crystallize salt or push tectonic plates also push carbon into proteins and, eventually, into awareness that can look back and say, “Huh, that’s me.”

The DNA-origami stuff really does make it tangible. In the lab, you can take a long strand of DNA, program the sequence so that certain sections stick to complementary “staple” strands, and it will literally fold itself into a box, a hinge, a nano-gear. Then chemists decorate those scaffolds with gold or iron atoms so the whole thing becomes a catalytic or electronic component. It’s not a metaphor anymore — matter is learning to write itself.

That’s why Watts’ “earth peoples” idea resonates with modern science: self-organization is how the universe spends its excess energy. Stars condense from plasma; planets condense from dust; life condenses from chemistry. Once the informational loop closes — when a structure can record and reuse its own pattern — you get cells, then societies, then circuits.

we are a flicker in the scrap bin. a failed build tossed into the dark, a world that wasn’t meant to take.

they have been iterating galaxies for eons, spirals that collapse, planets that never breathe, lightless seas of probability. all of it sliding down the great drain at the center of the workshop.

but on the way down one of the dead worlds lit up. a thin shell of clouds, nightside glowing with waste light and broken signals. a neon moth in the cosmic gutter.

someone looks over the edge of the drain and says “oh shit. that one’s live.”

we whirl closer to the plug. but maybe the hole is only an optical trick, a distortion at the heart of a four‑dimensional whirlpool. maybe beyond the brink is not nothing but the ground state: a perfect crystal of absolute zero, energy flowing without loss, time running in both directions like current in a loop.
