The fact he didn’t answer the question with anything besides a laugh, bothers Red more than it might’ve not so long ago. It comes across with the tone ‘oh of course not’, but then why not just say that? There seems to be a catch and he can’t hide a look of concern. Maybe it was nothing, maybe he was just overthinking it? He hoped that was the case, for now he was willing to drop the subject.
When Fire’s Charizard joined them, he wasn’t sure what to make of the narrowed look he was getting from him. Definitely a more hostile response than he remembered him having years ago, he could bring out Cinder to say hello as well. But something about that gave him a sinking feeling, so he’d just smile and wave to the dragon for now. “Hey Charizard, guessing Fire’s kept you busy all this time. You look even tougher than the last time I saw you.”
He hopes that might smooth things over a little, but something told him it probably wouldn’t. Just what was going on with this reunion?
Things were very much not smoothed. The draconic creature huffed, not quite a breath of fire, but the smoke was a warning.
Fire didn’t miss this detail, and turned an entirely unimpressed look onto Charizard, who returned it calmly with one of his own. A second passed in which Red didn’t exist, before Fire turned to face his brother again, and repeated, with emphasis, “As I was saying, he loves to see you too.”
Charizard did not give off the impression of loving to see Red. But the words did their job, and some of the tension vanished from his body, wings relaxing slightly, the closest thing to a peace offering he was willing to make.
“It’s been a long time, so I would hope we’ve gotten stronger,” Fire said lightly, humour in his tone. He hadn’t felt like a trainer in a long time, hadn’t battled as one, but the team had never stopped practicing their combat skills. Maybe that was enough?
