Among so many other things, and Martha Wells made it so that the murder bot diaries is inherently incapable of actually criticizing capitalism or slavery, by not only making the oppressed people actual literal super powered weapons that are dangerous to everyone around them, the enslaved people literally do not require food, water, clothing, and they barely need to breathe.
So all of the critiques that we could be making about capitalism about how necessities are withheld from people? That goes out the fucking window, because the main character doesn't actually need any of these fucking things, and doesn't even want them, and all of the other people it hangs out with are disgustingly rich and never need money for anything because they literally live in a place that's also run on slave labor but Martha Wells tells us that we should see it as a Utopia.
Literally there are no fucking poor people in this series whatsoever. We never see people who are forced to go hungry, we never see people who are left out in the elements, we never see people struggling with horrible jobs just to survive, none of that.

Just recently blitez through the whole murderbot series in like half a month (still have telemetry left, gotta get around to it sometime) but my brain is abuzz. Mainly because of the crossbreeding between the current hyperfixation and my long term haunting-me-whenever-i-read-scifi hyperfixation starsector. Because the crossover could be sublime. First of all the two worlds interacting has a pretty good way to go about it. In TMBDT (gonna call it MB) they use wormholes for FTL and starsector has their own wormhole FTL stuff, which is also extremely nieche to the point that it's used like once, but that's enough.
Also the themes. In MB generally the CR areas are very much distopian while areas outaide are generally more frontier style or utopian (at least those we have seen). In comparison starsector is post apocaliptic, there is only 1 Billion humans left (and that's a generous estimation) humanity has been pushed back techonologically by a significant margin and any atempts at recovering what was lost is bogged down by the politics of a new cold war. The best way this is shown imo is ships, and how every one has guns, I think there is only one civilian ship that has no weapon mounts in this game. One. Every other ship is packing heat.
The way the game goes about depicting AI is very fascinating, I won't get into the details because spoilers tho.
+the heavy overlap between nautical ships and space ships in the game is amazing.

There are literal public domain books written before segregation was officially outlawed in the United States that care more about enslaved people than Martha Wells does in 2026.
Go fucking read The Velvet glove by Harry Harrison. It is a literal short story and it accomplishes everything in in a short fucking story that Martha Wells will never ever fucking accomplish in anything she writes, because she doesn't actually think that slavery is bad at the end of the day.
That's why it's 2026, and the newest fucking book still has the protagonist demonizing other slaves and still prioritizes disgustingly rich people over poor people and enslaved people at every opportunity. To the point there's literally not any single fucking named characters who are poor. They literally don't exist in Martha Wells's worldview because the only people that matter to Martha Wells are rich people who are literally all slave owners.
The fact that this fandom tries to argue with me that the preservation ox team are not slave owners because they're nice to murder-bot when that's literally a not fucking true they are disgustingly and horrifically abusive to murderbot even before we get to the part where owning a slave is inherently abusive, literally their entire fucking planet is run on slave labor. Even if they hadn't gone solar systems out of their way to enslave murderbot, they are all slave owners because their entire goddamn economy is run on slave labor and they all profit from it and they are happy to do so.
Go read books that actually care about people out of fundamental level, something no Martha Wells story will ever do. She only cares about rich people who are literal slave owners. Everybody else in her eyes is gross and probably ugly and smelly too, and worth so little attention that they literally don't appear in this series at all.

finally sat down and designed the icons for narinder's weapons in chimes of bone, given the Crown crusader forms shift to match their bearers, and he decided it had to be DETAILED and PRETTY despite them being ICONS-
