Irrationalities surrounding menstruation is a cause for worry. It is a problem because one section of society is made to feel bad, insecure, discriminated, for something that is natural. And when one section of society is made to feel uncomfortable with their own biology, it breeds prejudice of some kind. And prejudice has always plagued society and bred discrimination — fight against it has been the theme of many freedom movements. And that is what this is. A fight for freedom. Freedom to bleed without all the toxic prejudices and fears that come with it. It's been a pleasure working with @ecofemme to bring this story to life. @ecofemme is an organization that supports the liberation of menstruation and works towards supporting so many aren't able to gain access to menstrual hygiene products. To not take the risk of uncertain outcomes is safer, but less burgeoning. It’s jarring to pressurize ourselves with one beaten path and not let ourselves experiment with the surfeit possibilities of being. We batter and criticize ourselves when we do something that’s “unlike” us, instead of merely being curious as to why we did something of that sort. Not only does that have the potential to lead to lack of growth and exploration, we may also become victims to self-abuse. In order to receive unlikely behaviours and modes of experimentation requires conscious efforts. When a compliment on physical beauty binds perfectly with the societal calibre , a fatal expectation is born. They seem harmless, incapable of anything but supposed confidence. For a moment, you feel proud. Gifted with a feature that is adored and wanted. Relieved that this is accepted. You're encouraged to keep up to it. To notice it more. Closely. Intrinsically. And so begins the chase to this sense of relief, painfully bashing ourselves in for not keeping up to this growing expectation of what it is to be truly beautiful. Because reaching that ideal is wanted. The potential of being wanted and accepted is what we strive for. So when we have a rule book of beauty that's said to be acceptable, we wouldn't want to skip out on that. We'd read through it thoroughly and try to find ways to achieve those standards. All we want to be wanted. And if abiding to ideal beauty rules does some of it, why wouldn't you? Truth is, it's never going to fit that ideal. The harder we push our pieces to fit into this puzzle, the more squashed and unfit we're going to feel. As a society, we don't need rule books of beauty to feel accepted. We need ideals that help us strive for compassion and love. Ideals that help us understand ourselves, the world we're in, the capacity of being the universe or to be nothing at all. The good news is that we don’t have to fit into this puzzle. To live collectively doesn’t require having core common interests. It requires thoughtfulness. Sex. The act of immense pleasure. An act of creation and of love. Sex is an avid, pleasurable, intense act that involves movement, presence, body and soul. Tightly romanticised into our world, this act stands out to be evergreen. But just like everything romanticizing brings, there lies the reality of it that tags along, unnoticed. A side that is rarely gazed upon and quickly dismissed. The idea to not want to engage in sexual acts. And this antonym is completely disregarded. It’s not normal. It’s a phase. As we are moving into very difficult times ahead, our challenges in the current age carry an eventuality of massive loss to life. Worshipping arbitrary ways of solving our problems is going to lead to massive wastage to life and resources. But, we have a choice. We can choose to be more open and transparent and update the rules that govern real men. We can open lines of communication to solve things more humanely. Society emphasises the stoic model of what it is to be a 'man'. A hardened 'strong' statue that feels only power and lust. Unknowing and confused he wanders, missing the innate wisdom that comes with vulnerability. Through cycles of social conditioning we have arrived at crossroad in the 21st century. Men are understanding the importance of communicating, of trusting in their vulnerability as human beings. Something we ALL live with. Intimacy amongst men is no longer being seen as a pursuit of sexual endeavours. Instead it is a safe practice that creates stronger bonds, removing oneself from the dark place of self-isolation.
