Back at It
Here I sit, awaiting my first audition in over 6 months. I am confident, yet I know the rust won't shake off officially until I walk through that door. Let's hope it happens before my first word and not after my last. Why have I taken such a long hiatus? I dedicated this past summer and fall to film the pilot presentation of "Medicinally Approved." A project in which I wrote/produced/and starred in. You can catch a limited free viewing of that at its website: http://MedicinallyApproved.com Since Med Approved is now testing the waters of the film festival universe, I have been able to free up time to get back in the auditioning world. One may think auditioning would be like riding a bike, but I think it better compares to using a pogo stick blind folded while juggling flaming knives. What could go wrong!?!
Sitting in traffic, today on the 101, I saw a license plate that read, "JS MGMT" So I asked him to roll down his window and then tossed my headshot on his front seat. Â He'll either call or have his vanity plate changed.

Hey Apple, thatâs Bull$#!+
Every convenience store in America sells the mini pronged cables that plug into that unique charger port on all iPhone 5 and above models. Â They are cheap, last minute purchases, when desperate, because we inevitably forgot to charge our iPhone.
Apple doesnât like that.
Sooooo, instead offering a cheap alternative for 7-Eleven, AMPM, and the likes, to sell to their clientele, Apple, instead, wrote some code that prevents any non licensed 3rd Party accessory to work when attempting to charge the phone. Â Yeah, the convenience stores still sell the cheap cords, they just donât work. Â And we only discover this, after we spent 5 or 10 bucks on them.
It doesnât stop there. Â The USB outlet, which plugs into the power outlet, that receives the opposite end of the cord lodged in the bottom of the iPhone, if not licensed by apple, wonât work either.
So...
If you are stuck in the middle of Boon Town just outside of Bumblefuck, America without an iPhone cord, AND your car is broken down.., Apple would rather  your iPhone die and you be raped senseless before a 3rd party cord would power your device to call for help.
Apple is so threatened by your one-time purchase of a zebra patterned iPhone cord that they would rather see all their devices power down and never work again than allowing them stay active by cheap non licensed alternatives.
And ânot certifiedâ means you probably spent under $30.00 for that chord. Â While the typical charger for any other smart phone averages in the $8-$12 dollar range. Â
Itâs funny how the cord is not able to charge the phone, but it does have the ability to prompt the ânot certified message...â Clearly proving that apple manipulates its software for these cables not to work.
Think twice before you buy your next iPhone.
Everyone needs a John... Take a gander.......

Self Tape Tip
You got a self taped audition request, now what?Â
Scott David, from The Actors Link & Scott David casting, recently shared extremely interesting advice on performing a self tape:Â
"Sometimes, we (casting directors) don't want the "perfect" self-taped audition," Scott would say, "because we know that actors will do a self tape over and over and over to get it right. So who knows if that take took said actor 4 hours to shoot a 30 second audition?
Why not prepare as if you were going into a casting office, THEN shoot it... once. If you flub a line or whatever, ask yourself... Would they have me do it again in the office?"Â
Too many times have I taken waaaay too long on a self taped audition. I sometimes agonize over several takes on how I look, sound, blah blah blah. What I have begun to start doing is treat every self tape request like an actual audition. I set a time for my call, ONLY allow 5 to 10 minutes to shoot, and be confident with what I send in.Â
Self tapes are becoming the norm. We all have gotten them, and I'm sure we've all spent more time on a few of them than the actual shoot we were auditioning for. That has to end.Â
Prepare. Know the material. Trust the reader you choose to do the audition with. After that. Leave it up to the gods.Â
***Self Taping is also referred to the Eco cast. I used to be against the Eco cast, but times change... As do my opinions. And at the end of the day, if you can't beat them, join them. ***Â

Showcase Your Brand
Auditioning was a difficult thing for me to grasp. Â I always hated the idea of having to market my talents and sell myself. Â However I finally realized that all forms of entertainment is constant marketing. Â If I didnât convince the casting director that I was worth selling to the producer, how could that producer then convince the viewers that I was worth paying the price of an entry ticket? Â Right? Â Itâs all marketing.
No actor wants to hear that they are branded. Â That is:Â No one wants to hear they are branded until their brand is making them a living. Â
As actors, we want to be recognized as diverse artists who are able to tackle any role. Â We grow up with our favorite stars whose many films eventually showed us the wide range of their talents. Â We also wanted all of that immediately failing to realize that most the stars we cherished had a body of work to look back on, but when they started out, they too were branded. Â
Develop a brand for yourself. It sounds petty and you know you can achieve more than what you, at first, target yourself towards. Â But right now, why not prove to this industry that you know how to work? Â Listen to and accept what they see you as and then present the best that. Â With a little convincing you will have a say on what your brand eventually becomes. Â But until then be what they want you to be. You will work. Â I promise (at least thats what I keep telling myself:-)
If you are having trouble knowing what your brand may be, look for the clues.  I had a a meeting with an agency early on in my career when I first left my conservatory.  I thought this was it, they want to sign me and the rest will be history⌠Well I sit typing, and the rest has still yet to be written, but anyway⌠In the meeting, the agent told me, âThere is a bad-boy inside of you that you didnât bring to this meeting.â  I was taken aback.  She could see that I carried a confidence in myself that some would have called cocky, or arrogant.  Unfortunately, I was making every attempt not to show these cards and to be extremely humble.  I was acting.â  She saw through me and did not sign me.
Should I have been an asshole? Â I donât think so, but I know I could have been more confident with myself. Â I didnât know my own brand. Â Thatâs what happened. Â I am not necessarily a bad ass, but I donât like bullshit. Â So when I walk into a room, I canât be bullshitting, I have to be as authentic as possible and my best work and self will emerge. Â
Would that agent have signed me had I not acted so humbly? Maybe. Maybe not. Â I can say that she would have signed me if I walked in there knowing what my brand was, and selling it. Â
Thanks for recycling. Â Fuck that. Â
Recycle, damn it.
How do you prepare?
Good question. There are many different ways to approach a role as well as several different styles. Most will tell you that script analysis is a great start. I agree.Â
Script analysis is essential to begin ones work. You have to know the tone and what the author is trying to say before anything else when you start your journey. Â Why did Arthur Miller write âDeath of a Salesman?â Â If you canât answer that then how can you begin to learn the role of Willy Loman? Â
Cold readings can be exciting and raw because it's the first time these words are escaping the page. Every time you repeat those words however, the excitement slowly fades. That is why we need to understand tone and theme, as actors; to tackle the task of making the lines our own, each and every time.Â
Something we can never escape are lines. As Leonardo DiCaprio says, "You can't begin acting until you know your lines." And I can assure you that Leo means; REALLY KNOW YOUR LINES. Whatever it takes. Only you know before you speak if you really know your lines. Some of us need days to memorize, while others take minutes. Whatever it is for you, make sure you've put in the time. Because once you open your mouth, everyone will know no matter what the excuse is that you try to give. They will know whether you've learned the material or not. So do what you have to do. Coming off natural can be difficult task, but even when you achieve that you need more than just believability to elevate yourself from good to great. Know your highs and your lows (scripts mark these with beats some of the time, but it is at your own discretion on how that beat turns or changes the mood.) A great tip I have received in my years of training is not not to discredit physical move. Â If you are playing cards and the scene calls for you to play cards. Â I rehearse the way I hold the cards, when, where and on what specific line, I place the cards. Â These actions have to be as instinctual as the words themselves, or the scene loses steam.
Create an urgency in what you set out to accomplish. Â A way to do this is to have strong choices. Everyone always says, Â âMake great choices.â Well what the hell does that mean? Right? It means that you have to have convictions and not to be wishy-washy. Â If your choice is to simply get someone to leave, you must carry that choice through the scene. Â Every word that utters from your mouth must carry the underlying intent that you do not want this person in front of you. The second you drop this intention and lose your choice, the scene is about nothing, you lose the attention of the audience. Â Whatever it is you choose to do, carry it through the scene.
Finally, have fun. A great audition coach and even better stage actor, Andrew Polk, put it simply when it comes to preparing, âWhen you're having fun with the material, put it down. You are ready.â

Triple Rep Showcase
Today is the day I launch into the next stage of my acting career. At 11:00am, I will showcase for 3 managers. 3 pm, 3 agents. Now this does not mean a guarantee of employment by any means, however it does mean that I have begun my journey into the world of representation. For the last two years I have polished my craft with weekly training in Venice beach amongst a group of professionals that push me to do my best work. Recently, I have taken my fresh look on my talents to the professional world: the workshop. Joining workshops has allowed me to take a stab at the casting room, without the pressure of hoping to land a job. I have presented several different scenes, received constructive criticism and have now locked into a wonderful piece from The Shield that I relate to and can truly live. What is a showcase? Well it is an opportunity to perform for managers and agents in hopes to show your best work and then get signed by a reputable source who will fight to get you in the door for the roles you are meant to play. Auditions are hard to come by without an agent or manager. You can scout actors access, backstage or IMDb pro on your own, but you will never see the coveted series regular roles until you have a decent agent or manager. I love my scene. I'm ready to rock. Keep your fingers crossed. This is the next step. Thanks for recycling.
Green Curry Rice with Roasted Chicken and Stir Fry Vegetables
I love curry. What I donât enjoy are canned curry pastes. To me they seem like the lazy way to go about cooking. They are not fresh; they are filled with chemicals; and whether red, green, or yellow, they all taste the same. There is nothing like a fresh made curry with garlic, ginger, lime, peppers, onion and several spices. Fresh curry âpops,â meaning that it is a flavor sensation!
For my curry I decided to char the ginger, garlic, pepper, and onion to add an extra level of flavor. This is the beauty of curry; the cook can tweak the cookery of the ingredients to achieve different flavors. I hope you enjoy this recipe; I know I did!
Charred Curry
1 finger pc of ginger (halved)
5 cloves of garlic (peeled & halved)
2 jalapeno peppers (halved)
1 onion (peeled & halved)
1 pt water
½ t cumin
1 T salt
b.p. t.t. (to taste)
Method
Use a dry hot cast iron pan. Note: You can do this by placing a cast iron on the stove top and turning the heat to medium.
Once the pan is HOT! Place the ginger, garlic, jalapeno, and onion face side down in the pan. Let the vegetables get a hard black sear (this is great flavor!).
Once vegetables are seared, place into a blender. Pour water, cumin, salt, and b.p. into blender and puree.
Strain curry puree.
Curry liquid is ready to use.
I love braised chicken and I love seared chicken with crispy skin. Braised meat with crispy skin is something that can be achieved easily with a little bit of technique.
Curry Braised Chicken with Crispy Skin
4 chicken thighs (de-boned)
Method
Heat a cast iron pan on high heat. Wipe the hot pan with 2 T of neutral oil. Once pan is hot, place the chicken thighs skin side down. Let cook until the skin is a deep golden brown (this is a nice sear!).
Once chicken is seared, take out of pan and reserve. Wipe out cast iron pan.
Heat oven to 325*F. Heat cast iron on medium. Pour curry into cast iron pan. Place the seared chicken flesh side down into curry liquid. Make sure seared skin is not covered with liquid (only the flesh should be submerged in the liquid).
Place cast iron pan with curry chicken into oven and let cook for 45 minutes.
Pull pan out of oven. The meat should be tender but the skin will be crispy from roasting in the oven! Take chicken out of pan and reserve. Place cast iron with curry liquid aside too (do not discard liquid).
White Carolina Rice
1 cup Carolina rice
1 pt water
Method
Place rice and water in a saucepot. Bring water to a simmer. Once at a simmer put a lid on the pot and turn heat to low. Cook rice for 19 minutes.
Turn heat off on rice. Keep lid on for another 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes take lid off. Use a wood spoon to fluff the rice. Note: Fluff the rice by stirring it with a spoon. Do not be too aggressive! Rice is delicate! You use a wood spoon because a metal one will break up the rice grains.
Put the lid back on the rice and set aside.
Stir Fry Vegetabes
1 cup green beans (split and halved)
½ cup baby carrots (split lengthwise)
Âź head of cabbage (rough chop)
Âź bu scallions (rough chop)
Âź bu cilantro (rough chop)
Âź cup peanuts
salt t.t.
b.p. t.t.
Method
Place all vegetables in a bowl. Note: Reserve cilantro and peanuts.
Heat wok on high heat (if you do not have a wok you can use a large sautee pan or cast iron pan). Once wok is hot pour in ½ cup of oil. Once oil is blistering hot (you can tell by flicking one drop of water into oil. If the oil makes a sizzling sound it is blistering hot!), toss bowl of vegetables into wok. Stir vegetables coating them in the oil. Season with the salt and b.p.
Keep stirring vegetables until all of their colors are bright and vibrant. Note: Once a vegetableâs color is bright and vibrant, you have cooked it to its âsweet spot,â which is the best time to eat that vegetable. Before the sweet spot, the vegetable is still raw. After the sweet spot, the essence of the vegetable is dead (limp texture and dull color). Once the vegetables are cooked set them aside to assemble the dinner.
Assemble
Take the rice and place into the cast iron pan with the curry liquid. The rice will absorb all of the liquid and flavor of the curry. Now, you have curry rice!
Pour the stir fry vegetables on top of the curry rice. Showcase the variety of vegetables to emphasize their color and crispness.
Place the chicken organically on top of the vegetables. If you like you can take a lime wedge and spritz the entire dish with a bit of juice to add a touch of fresh acid to the dish but it is not required. The dish is now ready to serve!
Note: When plating, a chef will tell a cook to plate the food âorganically.â This means to let the food fall naturally onto the plate. You want to put a lot of effort into plating but you want it to be effortless as well. Food looks best when it is handled less, not more! I have worked for chefs who put their hands all over the food while plating: adjusting, tweaking, grabbingâall this ever did was mangle all of the hard work that the cook put into cooking the food! Trust yourself when bringing your food to the plate and your food will look beautiful to you and your guest!
