Green roofs are just the most fantastic idea.Â
I would personally love to see them on every flat roof and every suitable surface. They help sustain wildlife and bird populations, reduce flooding (slightly), and drastically improve the appearance of urban environments.
I love them!

Some unusual examples of recycling/upcycling.
(NB: For the tyre example, use a glue gun, rather than a stick of super glue for time efficiency)

New York-based Brazilian artist Vik Muniz is best known for his experimental photographs done in various foods and recycled trash. Most recently, his documentary Waste Land, focusing on Rio de Janieroâs garbage pickers orcatadores, was nominated for an Academy award. All in all, Munizâs film project raised $300,000 for a local charity that helps the catadores.

Plastic retrieved from the sea to be made into bottles in pioneering recycling scheme | Â Guardian.co.uk
Ecover, the green cleaning brand, said on Thursday it will use plastic waste retrieved from the sea to create an entirely new type of sustainable and recyclable plastic bottle.
The Belgian company is working with plastic manufacturer Logoplaste to combine plastic trawled from the sea with a plastic made from sugar cane (âPlant-asticâ) and recycled plastic, in what it is calling a world-first for packaging. Products made from the packaging will go on sale next year.
But the company was unable to give details of how much plastic would be retrieved or what percentage of âsea plasticâ would be used in the packaging.
Ecover chief executive, Philip Malmberg, said: âWe wonât have a definitive figure on the amount we will retrieve we are just hoping to get as much as is possible and give fishermen an incentive to join the initiative and help clean the seas. We want to get the sea waste in as much of our packaging as possible â it will always depend on the amount and quality of the plastic they have managed to fish.â
Read the rest here.
FWIW, Ecover owns Method, which also is producing packaging from ocean debris (mentioned previously on Unconsumption here).Â

More ways of upcycling plastic bottles. I particularly like the bird feeder idea.
How GM Makes $1 Billion A Year By Recycling Waste
The automaker generates an eye-popping $1 billion a year reusing or recycling materials that would otherwise be thrown away â everything from scrap steel and paint sludge to cardboard boxes and worn-out tires. Itâs an unexpected but welcome revenue stream that comes from rethinking its approach to waste reduction.
