“That’s actually a really good idea,” he nodded, impressed. “I’d like to think I know a thing or two about parenting, but I think all parents are really new to the whole thing.” Grimacing, he shrugged dismissively. “I will try that, though. Take her shopping for her personal preferences.”

“I mean, it’s not like there’s a manual for kids. Except maybe for the obvious things; like, don’t drop them on their heads, don’t give them sharp utensils when they’re little, stuff like that,” she replied with a shrug. “That sounds like a plan. Uhm, how old is your daughter? That is, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“Probably,” he agreed with a simple nod. “Something tells me it’s the latter, though. She likes wearing my shirts and putting on my cologne. She lived with her mother for a long time, but she’s picked up on my little habits.”

“That’s kind of adorable. Uhm, in that case, maybe buy some hairpins that look like tie clips? Or put a small box with her hair stuff next to your things? Honestly, I have little experience with kids, so I’m just spit-balling, feel free to stop me anytime.”

“Well that’s why you have to learn how to do it. For those of you less fortunate,” he said with a smirk, “You have to care about how you tan. Take care of your skin and all of that.” He shrugged before his smile widened at her list. “I love me a good book list,” he commented as he took the piece of paper to look it over. He sighed as he squinted before forcing himself to pull his glasses out of his shirt pocket to slide them on. “I’m in denial of getting older,” he joked as he looked it over. “Well we should have most of these. Follow me, we’ll start with the oldest because I know we have some of these old classics. Are these for class or pleasure?”

“I know, but sometimes you just forget, especially when you’re out and about,” she smiled sheepishly. “I think we all are,” she grinned, “The joys of being a natural blonde I suppose, gray won’t show up for quite some years. And until it does I’ll just live in denial,” she joked back. “Um, they’re for pleasure. Left university some years ago, and even back then I didn’t really have to buy literary books. Earlier you mentioned you had some new books in? Any particular books you’d recommend?”

“Mhm, I hear it’s a delicacy. Like ready-made cookie dough mix? Apparently, that’s a thing now too. My daughter loves it” Sienna offered with a sympathetic smile as she perused the aisle. “I’m not sure what it’s doing here though. Maybe it got lost on the way to the dairy section? I never understood the overwhelming need to put sweet and savory together. I mean, for goodness sake, stay in your line. What’s next? Chicken with a raspberry compote?” It was quite the imaginative leap but where would they be without a slight exaggeration?

“Can’t blame your daughter, cookie dough is delicious. Don’t they have cookie dough stores or pop-ups here?” Back in London there’d been a pop-up for a couple of weeks at her local tube station dedicated solely to ready-to-eat cookie dough. Delicious, but bad for her wallet and her weight. Naomi couldn’t help the incredulous expression on her face when the other woman proclaimed not to like sweet and savoury items together. “But they go so well together! Usually,” she quickly amended. “Like... Salted caramel? Oh, and Reese’s Pieces. They do qualify as a sweet and savoury combination, right? Peanut-butter and chocolate?”

“You’re from out of town?” Olivia questioned leaning her palms against the counter to give her heels a brief break. Being on her feet all day sometimes got out of town and she hadn’t had much time to sit despite it being a slow afternoon. “Well, we love our familiar faces regardless where you’re from - what’ll it be?”

“Only a little bit, hoping to make this my new home though, at least for the next year or so,” Naomi replied with a laugh, scanning the menu on the wall. “What kind of tea do you have?”

“Hopefully, though he could really use a tan. That’s what’s concerning me the most.” He laughed and shook his head before running his fingers through his hair. “It never ends over here,” he said more to himself as he got to his feet. “Did you come by for some books? We’ve got some great new ones in this week.”

“A tan, yes, but I’d rather be pale than burned to a crisp. Which is annoying enough in a normal situation, I can’t imagine how much it would hurt for him...” she trailed off with a shudder. “Uhm, yes, actually, I did,” she smiled, grabbing the list from her pocket. “I was wondering if you had some of these?” Naomi asked, handing him the list. “If not, some good historical fiction or some great fantasy books would also do.”

Naomi has just moved to Hermosa Beach, before that she lived five years in the UK, and a year in the Czech Republic, but originally she’s from the Netherlands.

Going out clubbing is definitely not Naomi’s definition of a good time, she’d much rather curl up on the couch, with or without other people, and watch movies and munch on snacks.

Naomi’s never gotten drunk, the idea of losing control scares her, and she usually quits around her sixth G&T. 

In order to get people to like her Naomi will gladly offer to bake something for them, or bring along home-made snacks to social gatherings or her workplace.
