FUN FACT: After Free Willy tested so well with audiences, the studio increased its music budget and director Simon Wincer set his sights on Michael Jackson. The original plan was for Jackson to write a brand-new song for the film, but with his schedule packed, MJJ Music president Jerry Greenberg suggested using “Will You Be There” instead. The song’s gospel sound and themes of friendship, protection, and freedom fit the movie’s emotional finale so perfectly that many fans assume it was written specifically for Free Willy.
