I'm so excited to be attending this event this year! Conversations like this is needed at home and abroad. I remember reading Jamaica Kincaid for my English literature class when I was in 10th grade and I immediately fell in love with this woman as an author and fascinated by who she is as a person (One of my life goals still are to meet her😉). It was my first experience reading a novel that reflected the environment I grew up in as a young adult. •• Caribbean literature is under-celebrated and unappreciated by our own people. The vast number of women who we can call Caribbean authors are celebrated even less. Hopefully with time and growth this will change. Feminism, on the other hand, faces a similar challenge in the region. It does exist in the Caribbean but is less organized and recognized than in other parts of the world. Feminism is overshadowed by our many other political and social issues created by men. (at New York, New York)

#Womenshistorymonth has ended but Jamaica's only female National Hero and my personal SHEro that I try to channel with each step I take will always be beloved. Nanny of the Maroons is a symbol of the African heritage and raw strength that Jamaica once had. A woman who defended her people with dignity and who's truth is still a mystery to most of the population. We've heard so much about her but truly know so little about the power she really possessed and what circumstances she came from. Colonizers feared her. Our people loved her. She led rebellions and stood for nothing less than our freedom. Freedom we are still fighting for. There is so much to say about the incredible woman who I wish was talked about and taught to us as Jamaican children. I was raised in Jamaica and never heard her name before much less to know to her story! A woman like this is the epitome of who and what we need to be taught to know that we are all capable. Her grandeur cannot be captured in one post but I'll try🙌🏾 Honouring and celebrating Miss Una Marson this #womenshistorymonth for her massive contributions to Jamaican history. Here is #HERstory: Una Marson was a dynamic woman, she was a playwright, poet, author, feminist, broadcaster and international activist for black rights. Here are a FEW plays and poems she wrote: "Pocomania," "Cinema Eyes," "At What A Price (her 1st play in 1931)" and "London Calling" and the list goes on.... Her dream to bring Caribbean literature to the rest of world was fulfilled when she founded the Kingston Writer's Club where she worked with the likes of Hon. Louise Bennett (Miss Lou). She was also the first black female broadcaster at BBC in 1941 where her message was geared towards the Caribbean community. She championed black women's rights as the ONLY black representative in the 12th Annual Congress of the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship Conference in 1935 hosted in Istanbul. I'm so excited to delve into reading these plays by Ms. Una Marson! Too much of my history was not taught to us. The internet taught me about this honorable woman and I'm ready to see Jamaica through her eyes. Thank you @bluebanyanbooks for allowing my generation to be able to experience this.
