oof, big question haha. I will do my best to answer! It's probably pretty unsatisfying to hear, but I started in traditional art as a kid and had the HUGE privilege of being able to attend a classical art program all through high school. I started with learning how to hold a pencil properly and worked my way up to live model oil painting. The "eye" to see drawing errors (and basic knowledge of color theory) is the only thing that really transferred to the type of art I do now though. I was completely tied to exact copying, instead of creating something new by putting together lots of references. It took me a LONG time (over a year of drawing nearly every day on my graphics tablet) to actually *learn* how to draw digitally, and even now I'm learning new things all the time! My anatomy is embarrassingly weak still though, but I've made progress, especially with faces and leaning into some stylization! I will say though that I still use references every time I draw. I usually find images on pinterest (if I can ensure they're not AI.... ugh) and take pictures of myself to either alter the pinterest ref, or as a ref on their own. But to really get at your question - I would definitely start with "exact copying" of references, so that you can learn how to train your eye to see things like negative spaces, and to learn how to see errors in your own work. Digitally, this can work great by drawing a reference image and then importing the reference onto your canvas (or tracing the reference and overlaying that on your drawing) to see exactly what you got wrong! I didn't quite finish the program, but I also found Brent Eviston's figure gesture drawing classes on SkillShare to be really fun and helpful (warning: fully nude models). SkillShare is like $100/year which is NOT cheap, but they have 1 month free trials! There are also a lot of amazing stuff on youtube. Sinix Design and Christophe Young have some really cool stuff, and I also have found that some SamDoesArts videos can kick me out of art block too haha. When I was still learning a lot of the digital art basics, I would start a new drawing with a specific goal. For example, maybe I wanted to learn what a clipping mask was and how to apply it. Or I'd start in black and white and try adding color with color layers, etc. It can be VERY easy to get overwhelmed, so managing goals and not trying to solve all your art problems with a single piece can be helpful! And lastly, make sure you're still having fun! It's okay to give up on a piece or put stuff away for a few days. In fact, some of my best work happened after I took a 1 week break. Fan art can be very fun and motivating too, there's a reason why it's most of what I do! Sorry for all of my rambling haha. I hope this was somewhat helpful!
