I have a thought experiment that I’ve been entertaining for a while. I’m not sure if there’s a formal version of this somewhere, like the Trolley Problem, the Twin Paradox or, perhaps most famously, Schrödinger’s Cat. (If there is, please point me to it. I’d love to read it.) Anyway, I figured I’d make a post of it for posterity (sorry, pun). I don’t really have a name for it, but if I were to give it a “thought experiment-y” name, I’d probably go with “The Rewind Problem”. The way I see it, you can imagine time travel working in one of two ways. Either A) you go from one point in time to another instantly via wormhole or whatever method you can conjure, or B) you fastforward or rewind time in order to get to whatever point in time you want to. For this thought experiment we’ll assume that B is how it works. So say you’ve done all the math, all the research, and built a machine that by all counts should work flawlessly and rewind time. You get ready to go back in time, and you press the button, and nothing happens... except it does. You successfully make time rewind itself, but since you pressed the button before time started rewinding, time simply rewinds itself to the point where the machine stops working again and you have your finger on the button, just about to press it down completely. For you, it will be perceptibly identical to the button being jammed, even though you can take the machine apart and find that the button itself is fine. Yet when trying the machine again, the button is again “jammed”. Just a thought.
