Can we all tip our hats to Michelle Yeoh? Because one of the things that always bugged me about both the book and the musical is that Madame Morrible was so obviously cartoonishly evil from the beginning that it seemed frankly idiotic that Elphaba, who so easily sae through everyone else's bullshit, would have ever trusted her or wanted her approval. I always struggled to grasp Madame Morrible's point as a character, because she seemed so...well, simple and silly, in a world that was otherwise pretty nuanced and grounded.

But Michelle Yeoh's acting choices as Madame Morrible humanized her, which IMO is more realistic and also more horrifying. This was Elphaba's mentor, her teacher, the first person to ever truly validate her and say not just "it's not your fault you're strange" but "what you have is a gift to be appreciated and cultivated, not a shameful quirk to hide."

Having someone you always kinda figured was evil confirmed evil is a very different experience from having someone you looked up to, trusted, and gained some sense of your own self-worth from revealed to have been manipulating you toward bad ends all along. It's devastating. And something I think many of us can sadly relate to.
