Death was nothing like you expected. Everyone always thought it would be cold, lonely, painful, but you were warm, so warm. You were held tightly in your lover’s arms as he softly brushed his fingers through your hair. He held you to his chest, where you could hear the absence of his heartbeat, yet his chest still rose and fell as he inhaled your scent desperately, as if he would forget it.

You could no longer feel the stinging pain in your chest from the embedded wooden stake. Your blood had poured down your body, staining your lovely clothes. You tilted your head back and looked up at your beloved.

His eyes glowed as he looked at the horizon, then back to you. As he looked down at you, his darkened red eyes melted back into those soft blue irises you had fallen in love with. His face crinkled with a sadness you’ve never seen before, yet he still offered you a comforting smile.

“Remmick, will you play me a song? Just one last time,” you manage to croak out before your mouth fills with the metallic warmth of blood.

“Anything for you, Darling.” He adjusted himself against the hardened wood of the tree as he grabbed his stringed instrument that lay at his side.

Your head fell softly against his shoulder as he plucked a slow tune for you. It was the most beautiful sound you had ever heard. Everything felt so peaceful in that moment, just you and him waiting for dawn to break. You knew better than to let him stay long enough for that to happen. You felt a pit of sadness bloom as the skies began to brighten, knowing your time together would soon be over.

“It’s time for you to go, Remmy.” You turned to him and softly cupped his cheek in your hand, gently stroking back and forth with your thumb along his battered skin.

“Maybe it is, but I think I’d rather go with you.” he turned his head and placed a loving kiss to the center of your palm, never breaking his loving gaze from you.

“Please, Remmick.” You begged him, you knew he couldn’t stay.

A sad chuckle rumbled through him as he leaned in and kissed your forehead. “Shh, just close your eyes, darling. I promise I’ll be okay. We’ll be together, you’ll get to meet my people, how I’ve missed them so.”

“Are you sure you’re ready?” You ran out of air to continue speaking as you closed your eyes, comfortable and content that you would not be alone.
