Chapter 4: The unexpected

You woke up to Larissa already being gone for work and knew you had calls to make to friends who owed a favor. You got up and slowly went through your morning routine, getting dressed and making your coffee. You decided that while Larissa was at work, you would take the opportunity to call an old friend. You dialed a familiar number and waited for the soft voice on the other side.

“Hello?” The voice asked, sounding sweet and warm.

“Mary? It’s Y/N. How are you?”

“Y/N! Oh my goodness, I’m wonderful! How are you and how is the wife?” Mary asked, delighted to hear from her old friend.

“She is lovely, thank you for asking. She is actually part of why I am calling.”

“Oh? How so love?” Concern filling her voice.

“Well as you know, she is the headmistress for Nevermore Academy, and I am a substitute teacher. I know you have dedicated your life to finding children good homes, and I’m afraid that we have a child in our care at the school who does not have a good home. She came to Larissa and broke down sobbing. Mary, she is terrified to go home, says her grandfather beats her for being an outcast. She usually doesn’t go home on breaks but stays with staff here on the grounds. Turns out that she has been lying about why she couldn’t go home all this time. She was too scared to. She has taken quite the liking to Larissa and I would like to see if you would come interview her about the abuse preferably in our home where she might feel safer, as well as possibly let us take her whether that be long term fostering or as her permanent guardians. I know this is a big ask, but I don’t want anyone other than you handling this situation. I trust you, Mary.” You felt like you just unloaded a ticking bomb off of your chest. To one of your closest and oldest friends.

“Y/N! Absolutely, I will do anything that I can to help. The soonest I could come out to the farm would be Friday evening. Does that work?” Mary’s heart burst at the situation. She had a big soft spot for children in bad homes, and she knew if you were calling her… well, it wasn’t good.

“Friday works wonderfully. You can have dinner with us, and we can all get a bit more comfortable with Amelia.” You were so relieved and couldn’t wait to tell Larissa the good news. You gave her a bit more information about Amelia and her grandfather for her to do some digging before bidding her goodbye. After your call, you went on with your work grading a few papers to help one of the other teachers and waited for Larissa to finish her half day at the school.

“Darling, I’m home!” Your wife called, hanging her coat on the hook and taking off her heels with a long sigh. She walked over to the sofa and flopped on it, letting the reality of her day sink in. “Hello my lovely” you spoke softly and bent over the back of the couch to kiss her. What you didn’t expect was her to grab you and pull you into her lap over the back of the said sofa. You squealed and laughed with delight at the sudden movement. “Well hello to you too!” You laughed. She buried her face into your neck and sighed again. “What’s the matter, love?” You asked kindly while unpinning her hair and running your fingers through it.

“Amelia came to my office today again. She’s hurting and apparently won't talk to anyone but me. She came to my office today and wouldn’t utter a word for five minutes. Then the only thing she asked was… was for a hug."” Rissa’s eyes glassed over a bit, but she kept her composure about her. “You were right, darling, we have to do something” Your wife sounded almost broken, in a way you have never heard before.

You and Larissa had decided to stop “Trying” per say, it was affecting your mental health too much. You had gone on with your lives and raving sex life as Larissa liked to call it. You were enjoying the two of you learning all the new things about each other's bodies. It was a bittersweet couple of months for you. Every now and then, you would look in the mirror and wonder what your belly would look like. Would you have a tiny basketball under your clothes? Or maybe carry so far out in front that you couldn’t tie your shoes at six months? You didn’t dwell too hard on the thoughts, but it definitely made you curious. One thing though that you didn’t mind was Larissa talking to your empty womb, or as she referred to it “Little future baby”. She only did this after she thought you were completely asleep. You never gave in that you were awake, but it was the only thing giving you hope these days.

It was a normal Tuesday night for you two. You made dinner, and Larissa got home late from the school. It was nearing thanksgiving, and the students were all panicking about their final tests before the holiday break. Larissa was telling you all about the young girl that she had grown to love at the school Amelia. She was raised by her grandparents after her parents were killed in a car accident when she was 6, by the time she turned 10, her grandmother had passed, and her grandfather wasn’t the nicest of men. (Especially to outcasts) Amelia usually stayed on school grounds for break with a few other students and usually a house mom or two. This poor child needed a loving figure in her life, and somehow, that became Larissa.

“My love, she came into my office as quiet as she could today. the second I looked up at her, I saw she was crying and couldn’t stop my feet from getting to her as quickly as possible. Once I reached her, she fell into my arms and dropped her bag. Thankfully, I was close enough to the door to lock it to give her some privacy. I did something I’ve never done with a student.” Larissa sat her fork down and looked up at you with glassy eyes. “I kicked off my heels and sat on the floor next to the fire with her in my lap and just held her while she cried. Darling, she begged me not to send her home for any more breaks… Sh-She confessed that her grandfather beats her, hard and often when she’s home. The broken wrist she had from last summer… He did it.” Larissa was full on sobbing now. It broke you in pieces, and you got up from your spot at the table and pulled her with you to the couch. Dinner be damned, this was more important.

“I texted her teachers from my phone dismissing her from class for the day, and I just held her in my arms and rocked her. She crie-she cried until her voice was hoarse. I’ve never held a student like that, but she was so small and so frail. She is very skinny, skin and bones. She felt like a feather, my love. A damn feather!” You held your wife in your arms and let her release all the feelings she had all day. “Honey…” You started gently, but it had to be said. “You are a mandated reporter. We have to call this one in.” Your wife’s eyes went wide at the fear of losing this young girl to the foster system. “y/n no!… I mean, yes, but I don’t know if she can handle all of that right now.” She dropped her head into her hands and rubbed her now pounding temples. You kissed her cheek and stood up, walking into the restroom and coming back out with a few Tylenol, and grabbed her wine glass from the table. It's not the best combo, but it would have to do in a pinch. “Here my sweet, take these.” She took the pills and thanked you, and the two of you made quick work cleaning up dinner before heading to the bedroom. Rissa was able to change her clothes but was too spent to do much more than that. You pulled her up without a word and had her sit at the vintage vanity in your bathroom.

She let you gently wipe away her makeup from the day and apply her favorite cold cream. You then let her head fall back against you with her eyes closed and gave her a serum face and temple massage. You kissed the top of her head and helped her up leading her to the bed you sat her down and slid the thin chemise off her shoulders ” Lay down on your stomach dear let me take care of you” She did as she was asked and you straddled her, sitting on her thighs slightly. You had already gotten out the mango vanilla massage butter and started to apply it to your wife’s back. And softly whispered to your blissed out wife. “I’ll be right back, my love.” You climbed off of her and grabbed three bottles of cool water and a few granola bars before climbing back into your bed. You rubbed Larissas' cheek and spoke softly. “My love, I need you to drink this all down. Ok, baby?” Your wife nodded her head and took the bottle and drained it. “So good, baby. Do you need a snack?” She nodded her head, and you gave her a granola bar to munch on and the other bottle of water for her. “Thank you, darling, for everything.” She said to you, giving you a kiss.

As soon as she finished, you opened your arms for her to come snuggle, and she gratefully did. You turned out the lights, and slowly, you started to drift asleep. When Larissa thought you were asleep, she lowered her hand from your chest and softly started to whisper. “Hello my future love, I’m your mama. I know one day you will listen to my voice and squirm and kick my hand from in there. You are already so loved by your mummy and I. We dream about you, who you’ll be, and where you will go in life. But my sweet little one, just know we are always going to show you love, and you will always have a home in our arms and in our hearts.”

In the slow passing time that followed your revelation, the farmhouse you shared with your wife became a hub of excitement and anticipation. You poured over books about pregnancy and ate all the right foods. But days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. One negative after another. You started losing the excitement and started gaining sadness.

You knew it wasn't Larissa's fault as just to be sure with her shape-shifting abilities that she had good numbers. Which she did. But the problem wasn't her, it was you. You felt awful. Every test you had taken came back with another single line, making you feel even more broken.

"Darling, it's not your fault." Larissa cupped your cheeks with her hands and wiped away the few tears that had stained your face. "But it is! You don't get it, Rissa, it's MY body that won't work!" You pulled away from her and backed up against the wall, holding yourself while you cried so hard that you started to hyperventilate.

Larissa knew you were having a breakdown. She had seen it from you before. The uncomfortable panic and anxiety that your brain tried to trick you with. She quickly kicked off her heels and slowly walked up to you. Kneeling down in front of you where you had slid yourself to the floor.

"My love…" was all she had to say for you to crack and leap into her arms. "Shh, that's it. Let it out honey." She rocked you in her arms until you calmed, and then scooped you up off the floor and carried you into your large bathroom. She sat down on the stool next to the big claw foot double tub and started the water. She did it with ease without letting go of you in the process.

She stood up and walked over to the bathroom counter and set you down while still standing in front of you. She gave a silent look, asking permission to undress you. You just nodded your head. As soon as the two of you were undressed, she turned off the running water and gently lowered you into the bath.

She stepped away, and your eyes filled with panic. "Calm now, my love, I'm not leaving." She reached into the drawer next to the sink and pulled out a lighter and lit three of your favorite smelling candles. And dimmed the lights low. Slowly, she walked over and slid in behind you into the warm water.

You allowed her to pull you back against her, and she peppered you with kisses. She started at your shoulder, then your arm, working her way around to your neck and up to your cheek. She slowly turned your head and gave you a long, deep kiss, wrapping her arms around your waist and holding you tightly to her.

"I love you, Y/N Weems." She told you softly and kissed you again. "No more tests, no more scheduled sex or temperature checks. None of it. It will happen when the goddesses above deem it to be honey." You let out a shuddering breath at her statement. Your shoulders are relaxing more than they had in weeks, and as much fun as you have had baby making, it felt like work, not love, and you were tired.

You relaxed in silence as your wife washed your hair and then hers, taking her sweet time pampering you properly. She drained the tub and stepped out to grab a towel, then helped you up and wrapped you in a towel and scooped you up again. She set you down on the bed and brushed your hair, and braided it just the way you liked and slowly removed your towel. "No babies tonight, just love…" she whispered into your ear.

She laid you back onto the bed and lifted one of your legs, peppering kisses from your ankle to your upper thigh and down the other leg too, causing a bright red blush to envelop your pale skin. Straddling you, she kissed your navel and trailed up to your breasts, kissing and giving little nips and squeezes. She ran her fingers through your hair and attacked your neck and jaw and soon caught your lips. You were breathless with desire for her touch. When she said love, she meant it with all her being.

It had been three years since they had exchanged vows under a canopy of oak trees, surrounded by their closest friends and family. The two had joined their lives in a union that defied conventions and captured hearts from everyone around, even their students.

Their love had grown stronger with each passing day, a testament to the undeniable connection they shared. The students and other teachers gossiped about them "sneaking around," but they paid no attention. They had each other, and that was all that mattered.

As they strolled through the lush meadow that stretched out behind their charming farmhouse, Y/N's heart swelled with happiness. She looked up at her beloved Larissa, whose striking blue eyes sparkled with an undeniable joy.

"Lissa," Y/n whispered, her voice trembling with emotion, "I can't believe how lucky I am to have you in my life. Every day with you feels like a dream come true."

Larissa squeezed your hand gently and smiled down at her. "Honey, you are my everything. I cherish every moment we share together."

The wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it a sense of anticipation, as if nature itself was holding its breath, waiting for the next chapter of their story to unfold.

That evening, after a delicious homemade dinner, the couple sat together on their cozy porch swing, gazing up at the summer starlit sky. Y/N nestled her head against Larissa's shoulder, feeling a sense of peace wash over her.

As the night went on, you turned to your wife with a mysterious glint in her eye. "Lissa, I have something to ask you," she said, her voice filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

You looked up as your heart raced. "What is it, my love? You're making me curious."

A slow, radiant smile spread across your face. "I think... I think I want to have a baby."

Time seemed to stand still as Larissa processed your words. Her eyes widened with disbelief and then overflowed with tears of joy. She threw her arms around you, holding you tightly.

"Oh, Y/N, you've just made me the happiest person in the world!" Larissa exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion. "A baby? Our baby? As in you want to make a mini us?"

You nodded, your own eyes brimming with tears. "Yes, Lissa, our baby. I have been really thinking about it, and it feels like there is a hole right here." You pointed to your chest and looked down. "Like I can't stop the dreams, and honestly, I don't want to. I know I said I didn't want kids, but this big house needs little feet running around. And so do I." You told her the last bit was almost a whisper.

"My love, I never wanted to push you, but I want that too. But I would sacrifice that to be with you. Are you completely positive you want to do this? She looked deep into your eyes, and you whispered, "Absolutely honey"

The night sky seemed to shimmer with newfound magic as you held each other, envisioning the beautiful journey that lay ahead. Your love, which had already defied so many odds, was now blossoming into a new chapter, one filled with hope, dreams, and the promise of a family of your own.
