So I’m watching episode 1x13, the one where they kidnap Mary, and when they are trying to find one of the kidnappers, after Steve drove a bike up the stairs, they try to decide how to make a guy open his mouth so they can check if the tooth Mary knocked off is his.

Turns out that the method Danny picks is the “Williams’ family special” which involves grabbing the hair at the back of the head and pulling as hard as you can.

I’m trying to decide if that was Eddie’s technique, if it was Clara or if the Williams’ siblings got a bit handsy with the hair from time to time. It could also be Grandma William’s trick, in which case she taught Danny a lot more than cooking.

Matt literally whined at being so roughly woken by the monster Matt was using as a living pillow. “Noooooooo, just fell asleep!”

Mary continued to stare into the distance with her phone held limply in her hand and the email still open on the screen. To say she was in shock was an understatement.

“I got in,” she said softly, still not fully computing the idea. “I actually got in…”

Applying to nursing school was something she did on a whim after having late-night pancakes and coffee and talking with Kono. Oh sure, she had been thinking about it for months since the death of Deb, but she was still second guessing her decision and haven’t told anyone else that she was going to do it.

Kono rolled her eyes at the woman next to her, “It’s not that bad.”  When Mary waved her hand around to their surroundings she had to concede at least a little bit, “Okay so it’s not ideal.”

The truth was they were sitting in the manager’s office of a local club.  And if that wasn’t bad enough, her Boss was on his way and he was less than pleased with his teammate and sibling. 

The evening had started out well enough, a girls night out to blow off some steam.  The Australian Thunder Down Under.  It sounded good, in theory at least.  A bunch of well oiled men strutting across a stage in a local bar couldn’t be all that bad, right? 

But after several rounds of drink and several dollar bills later the girls had found themselves escorted to the manager’s office.  The only reason they were there instead of the jail was because of her connection to 5-0, Kono was certain of that. 

“You should totally demand a surf or beach day. I mean…you guys hardly ever get any time off and that can’t be good for your body.”

Mary nodded in agreement about Joan growing up fast. “Last month I was looking all over for my phone and I turn around and there she was trying to unlock it like she’s seen me do hundreds of times…so I ask her what she was doing and she said ‘wanna call uncle!’ so who am I to deny her that. I think she babbled at him for like 10 minutes and then was like ‘okay, here mommy.’ gives me the phone and walks off.” Mary laughed at the memory.

“You know any places looking for registered nurses?” Mary asked when Kono mentioned helping her look for work. “Around the time I adopted Joan, I started I started classes and after taking time off when Deb got sick and then died, I’m nearly done.”

“I think not giving in to Steve wanting to ship me off every time things get tough is going to go a long way in him seeing me as an adult…I hope.”

“I wish we could get surf days!  The way our schedule works there’s no chance”  Kono sighed before giving a soft laugh as she listened to the story about Joan. 

“It’s amazing that they know how to use the technology so young.  But being able to wrap you around their finger?  That never changes,” she shook her head as she smiled. 

Kono was surprised when Mary mentioned becoming a nurse, “Hey, that’s great.  I don’t know anyone myself, but I bet Noelani does.  She’s our new Medical Examiner and I’m sure she has some contacts or friends.  I’ll give her a call.”

“So...about those surf days...you think you could play hooky for an afternoon?” Mary asked as she waved a waitress over to get their check.
