and you know what the fucking bullshit is  they’re replacing it with a ~6 months free of a subscription to a third party captions provider~ which of course you’d have to pay for after those 6 months are up and you KNOW random youtuber #9039 isn’t going to bother to keep paying for that either because they won’t have the money or they just won’t care. and youtube’s going to act like that’s a perfectly fine alternative that won’t result in the majority of the site suddenly going from “more or less accessible” to “Fuck You If You’re Disabled” 

“citing low usage” are you fucking kidding me nearly every worthwhile video i watch uses community captions. sometimes they’re kind of janky cuz they were made by some 14 year old who thought it’d be funny to put their own irrelevant jokes and commentary in there but that wasn’t a reason to ditch the feature entirely when its so useful and important

i’m not even hard of hearing and i rely on them to watch videos in other languages…this is literally how people have been making english subs for japanese songs and the like for years and it was great because you didn’t have to reupload the videos yourself and take away views from the original creators. many creators don’t allow reprints of their work whatsoever so if they go through with this (which unfortunately they seem pretty deadset on because lololol moneyyyyyy) it’s entirely likely that there just won’t be a way to watch that content with captions

there’s a petition to keep community captions…i don’t know if it’ll really do anything since they’re already going ~oh but we have Paid Alternatives!~ but don’t just let this pass by this should be a huge deal but i’ve barely seen anyone talking about it (not that i expect people to talk about things of any particular importance on tumblr but it’s not even getting attention on twitter beyond that one thread and like 2 other posts)

I assume they can get away with removing the community captions because they're technically providing free options but there's two problemos—

1) Do you REALLY think Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau are going to spend hours on captioning their own videos?  It doesn't seem likely. Some YouTubers might take the time to add their own captions, though a lot of YouTubers might not have the time/skill to do so. That's why YouTube had community captions to begin with.

2) The automated captions are probably what 99% of YouTubers are going to use and unless YouTube spends the next two months perfecting their automated captions, the feature would be functionally useless. YouTube's auto captions are infamous for being inaccurate and it hinders accessibility.

There's a role YouTubers can give to trusted people and YouTube has allegedly hinted at captioning being one of the powers the role has. This is essentially preserving community captions without the annoyance of children using the feature to troll people. (It depends on whether the YouTuber is willing to give people the other powers the role has, of course. I'm not 100٪ how much control the role has besides not having access to revenue.)

listen, i fucking love whales. i do. i have advocated against cetacean captivity and whale hunting since i was like 13. i HATE whale hunting. but have you ever seen the prices for food in a grocery store in indigenous areas, if they even have one? 

Bob ordering a Big Mac is VASTLY different from indigenous people sustainably hunting to survive. One is the product of massive corporations exploiting underpaid workers, destroying the environment, and abusing animals. The other is a cultural tradition and likely the only option for some people. If there's anyone to be mad at, it's the corporations who take over fishing/hunting grounds and screw over the people who rely on those animals to literally stay alive.

I’m so glad that my blog has inspired you! I can definitely offer you a few tips and give you a general idea of how and where to begin. I hope all of this helps you out, and as always, feel free to reach out to me through IMs as well. I’ve done a lot of “RP mentoring” type of things where I’ve helped new roleplayers out and it’s always been a pleasure and a great experience.
