White tendrils of mist pool softly at her ankles. She sniffs. A sliver of green appears below dark storm-cloud eyebrows, buried behind a curtain of white hair and the protection of her arms. "You know about me. But not him? Why didn't you find out yourself?"

There is the sound of a breath, a long, deep sigh followed by a hum such as she might give to feel the first warm sun after a long winter, and the shadows darken and thicken all about her.
"No, of course not," says the quiet, breathless voice. Her pale hair stirs at a light touch. "Then you will tell me where our old friend is keeping himself."
She flinches at the touch and moon-colored fingers curl up protectively over the top of her head. There's nowhere to go. She can feel the shadows stretching around her like walls and retreats to the more comfortable darkness behind her eyelids. She shakes her head once, then again. Her cheeks are hot again and the tang of saltwater spreads across her skin.
"Go away..."
Cold humor laces the laugh that swirls through the shadows, circling her, spiraling down to where sheâd fallen, bleeding through into the reply: âIs that concern, little one?â Another gray-toothed grin breaks the dark gap in a bushâs foliage.
The stranger's presence had frightened her before, but now she's trembling. She wants to snap at him to go already, if that's what he wants (because this stranger being eaten by the Dark One is becoming a more appealing notion by the second) but she can't bring herself to tempt him. For all Aisling knows, this shadow could free her old enemy and then it would be only a matter of time until she's cut down like the rest of her people were. She tucks her trembling arms against her body and fights the returning tears. "...No."

The answer came from the shadowed underside of another branch, just a little ways above her perch. âI was actually here to confer with a mutual friend of ours.â There is just the slightest lilt of a smirk to it, and all the world seems to still for a moment so the next word comes as a breath on the back of the girlâs neck. "Crom"
The creature's cold arrogance angers her. The darkness angers her. Her own fear angers her, and she still stings with indignation from the insults. A 'mutual friend'? What was he talking about? She bares her teeth and sits up straight, holding deliberately still though her body itches to run. "There's nothing for you here. Go away." She prepares to leave, but freezes dead as stone as the single word brushes against her back. She slips off the branch with a gasp but quickly catches hold of another and swings herself to the forest floor. "No one speaks to the dark one! He is a monster. You will die."

"Queens do not weep so weakly." The words come tauntingly, quiet as a thought, seemingly to curl around the shell of the fey-girl's ear. "Whatever would your mother think?"
Aisling gasps and twists around toward the source of the voice, a pale hand flying up to freeze by her ear. The already-crouched form curls in on itself defensively, curtains of white hair falling forward to shield wide, red-rimmed eyes as her face contorts into a snarl.Â
"A queen? Of what throne?" The words are defiant, but her voice is too high, too young. Her eyes sting with fresh tears at the mention of her mother, old rage mingling with sorrow and the fear of a threatened animal. Her whole body buzzes, but there is nothing to lash out at. She hisses quietly. "You dare taunt me? In my forest? You dare mention her name? Show yourself.â
Silvery eyes blink open in the dark and a quiet chuckle can be heard. âHm, no, not just yet.â A grin joins the eyes for but a moment before they all wink out of existence and the stranger is lost to the shadows once more. âAnd, in answer to your questions: Yes.â
The eyes. They were there, just for a moment, paired with that sharp, merciless smile. Her pupils narrow despite the dark and she springs into the branches of an oak across the clearing, disappearing like a ghost into the leaves. This is her battlefield. The smoke and mirrors are her weapon to use, and she will not be corralled like a disoriented mouse in a den of cats. She leaps to another position dozens of yards away, perching on a gnarled limb of twisting bark high above the ground.
"What do you want?" she snaps.
