Honey:

honey is typically used to “sweeten” a situation, so using sugar, syrup, apple honey (Bee Free Honee is personally my favorite brand), or stevia would work just as well and it’ll help save our bee friends! *Before anyone replies saying “buying honey saves bees though” please educate yourself with these links!* Also note that honeybees are one of the few species that are not endangered; the mass production of honeybees by humans has caused rapid endangerment to wild bees, who are the main pollinators of the foods we eat.

If you would like to help save bees then you can plant some flowers and herbs that they like, make a bee hotel, buy organic as much as possible, and transition to a vegan diet (or if that’s genuinely not possible for you just cut as much meat and dairy out of your diet as you can) because more crops for animals means less habitats for bees. Milk:

almond milk, coconut milk, rice milk, soy milk and any other plant derived milk. Any of these will work in place of dairy milk. If you want to be more specific in your spells though… -almond milk: money, prosperity, luck, and wisdom. -coconut milk: protection or spiritual cleansing. -soy milk: prosperity and amplifying psychic abilities. -rice milk: protection and attracting rain.

Blood: red wine, pomegranate juice, crushed berries, dragon’s blood, or maple syrup are great alternatives.

Bones: Petrified wood.

How to celebrate the Great Autumn Feast 🍎

Mabon, Autumn Equinox, Apple Harvest, Pagan Thanksgiving, whatever you want to call it: it’s here. A time when the summer’s bountiful harvest and warm light are equally matched by the deep slumber and darkness of winter to come. Usually celebrated from September 21st until the Autumn Equinox on the evening of September 22nd. This is by far my favorite holiday to bring my entire family together an give thanks to the many blessings we have in our lives. For we made it through another summer. Through the ups and downs of harvest season we step forward as a family to rest up, heal, and welcome this winter’s chilly embrace. The Great Autumn Feast as we like to call it is a fruit based celebration. Summer is nearly gone but her fruits aren’t! Apples, citrus fruit, berries, melons, you name it, it’s happening. Apples especially are the best food in this celebration and often times we try to see just how many different ways we can use them in food, decorations, spells, everything. Since my pups are part of my family we include them and celebrate this feast together 🐶

Here are some ways you can celebrate this season at home, the witchy way ✨ :

🍎 kitchen & hearth witches can make various offering cakes made with applesauce, can make apple pies with added crust sigils, or my favorite making apple votives and letting them sit in a witch cauldron or steel bucket for the rich energy to fill your home. dry apples and make garland for your home too if you’d like a dry approach to adding apple vibes to your home. add apples to your dog’s food bowl for a cute game of bobbing for apples. don’t worry apples are 100% safe for dogs. so have fun! maybe make them apple treats of their own!

🔮 diviners can make use of this season for a lot of reasons. for one, it’s a prime time for balancing. balancing yourself, your life, your home. reflect on this past year, what has happened thus far? there’s no better time than now to search deep within for what we seek. If you want to add additional reflection have you dog sit with you. for dogs see you for you, no falsehoods. they love you for you and that’s it, the sort of realism one needs to reflect on themselves to start off winter on a positive note. so pull those tarot or oracle spreads, pull out your pendulum & ouija boards, your cards, stones, runes, sticks, and bones. dial up the boos 👻 you have some work to do ✨

📱 where the tech witches? my witches who practice pop culture spells? you all can have fun too! i always say nothing makes the season brighter than setting your digital themes to corresponding colors of that season. so oranges, reds, yellows, browns, and greens are all great for colors of the feast. have apples on your lockscreen, bonus if you have a photo with apples with a dog your dog. actually just make everything apples and dogs. that should cover everything lol. oh, but please also cleanse all your digital spaces and altars! your phone is a witch tool, cleanse out all the old summer text messages. cleanse out people who make you feel a pit in your stomach. we want a light heart this winter.

🍁 nature witches go out and get that nature! hike your booty off, collect those huge leaves, make leaf piles and jump in them with your dog too! let your inner child’s spirit enjoy the feel of autumns come past. make leaf crowns for you and your pup, make scary shrunken apple heads for natural scarecrows with collected fallen sticks on your afternoon dog walks. the best time to embrace this season’s aesthetic is to wonder amongst the wild at dusk. whether it’s a crisp forest evening or the cool sands of the desert, dusk will reveal this season’s true beauty. collect natures fallen bounty for spell work in the coming months (acorns, fallen leaves, goat heads, tumble weeds, fallen sticks, cacti skeletons, helicopter seeds, pinecones, pine needles, cactus fruit, dried/dead flowers of any species) just make sure you bring your dog along so they can find you the best spell work items to use! dogs are good “finders” for magical ingredients.

**remember, anyone can do what i’ve listed above. witchcraft is for all, and the spirit of autumn is to include all. anyone can enjoy the bounty of blessings. so be kinder to your fellow human beings now that we are all walking into the darkness of winter together.

so with Ostara fast approaching, I wrote a little ‘spring spritz’ to refresh your altar space, room, yourself etc!

ingredients:

💐snow water (beginnings, transformation)

💐salt (purification)

💐sugar (sweetness, comfort, encouraging pleasantness)

💐ginger (motivation, invigoration, represent the arriving warmth)

💐pink rose petals (encouraging friendship)

💐daffodils (representing spring and a dash of love in the mix)

💐thyme (inspiration, invigoration, refreshment)

💐fennel (protection)

method:

quite simply add everything into a spray bottle and spritz to your heart’s content! Personally, I like to do this after physically cleaning the spaces and I love humming whilst I spray to increase my intention of pleasant refreshment!

You will need:

Blue (or whatever color you associate with calmness) pillar candle

Sage or palo santo

Fire safe dish

Water (preferably holy but tap can suffice)

Light the candle

Use the flame from the candle to light your sage/palo santo and place in/on fire safe dish

Inhale deeply

Exhale fully (Repeat 3 times)

Pray over water (whether holy or not, pray to whoever you see fit)

Dip your fingers into the water and splash the sage as you say (either vocally or mentally) the following phrase 7 times.

Allow the candle to burn completely out on it’s own.

Repeat if necessary

don’t fill up the pot the whole way, leave about an inch of rim so you can actually water

but don’t plant way too deep either, this could lead to air flow issues which can lead to rot

don’t use really big pots for small plants. it makes it very hard to know when to water.

only go up an inch or so in diameter every time you repot. if you get a new plant and find it has almost no roots you can sometimes even go down a size. I’ve found many common houseplants like Philodendrons especially like this.

remove plants from plastic pots by gently squeezing, not always by pulling on the plant

remove plants from terracotta or ceramic/glazed pots by being gentleeee and maybe by running a knife or other utensil around the diameter of the pot if it’s really stuck and also by praying

loosen the roots by squeezing or gently untangling the root ball

it’s ok if you break some roots i promise

sometimes you’ll want to remove as much of the old soil as you can, other times just remove enough to leave some loose roots

throw small amount dirt in bottom of pot first, then place plant in. the base of the plant should ideally be level with where you want it when fully planted. if not, lift up and add more dirt and repeat

some plants you can plant deeper than they originally were, others you can’t

add dirt around the plant, packing gently. don’t pack it super duper tight but don’t just toss it in there loosely either

add one handful at a time. rotating the pot is easiest

rotate and gently pack, rotate and gently pack until dirt level is where you want it

water your plant in when finished. water deeply until the water runs out of the bottom. this is important to prevent air pockets (roots can’t grow in air). with succulents you may want to wait a few days to water in to prevent rot but most times they’ll be ok.

if you did have air pockets, your dirt might settle a bit. add some more and water again.

Sometimes if you are having trouble in particular aspects of your life, your birth chart can help you figure out either what is going on or what you can do to fix it. My Ostara lasted the entirety of the week, doing a bit at a time because I was busy the actual day of the sabbat. Most of my celebrating and rituals were actually the day after!

• Light a candle, say a small prayer or chant, and just meditate a little

• Do a simple card pull!

• Cleanse - you, your room, everything. Even something simple, like lighting sage

• Look outside - think about the season and how it is changing, take it all in

What matters is that you are celebrating the sabbat in ways that focus on its actual meaning, the day you celebrate it on doesn’t actually matter!

Psychometry is a type of scrying that is done by sensing energy from objects, images, and other items that have come into contact with the person/thing you are trying to gather information about. The term was coined in 1842 by Dr. Joseph Rhodes Buchanan. Buchanan put forth the idea that all things in the world give off energies. 

Psychometry, while not a particularly popular form of divination, has proven to be effective when done by those with experience and talent for it. Several notable Psychics have used Psychometry when working with law enforcement agencies (See: Rosemarie Kerr x). The notion that all objects retain at least a tiny bit of the energy of the person who possessed them is a foundation of Witchcraft, and in this sense Psychometry is closely linked to energy works of many kinds. 

To learn Psychometry there are a few helpful steps to follow. 

🔮 Obtain an object from someone, preferably someone you do not know well. Make sure they are the last person to touch it and try to interact physically with it as sparingly as possible. 

🔮 Find a spot where you can concentrate, free of noise and other distractions. Somewhere that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. 

🔮 Ground yourself in whatever way works the best for you. (see: Grounding) 

🔮 Take the object in your hands when you feel clear minded and relaxed. 

🔮 Feel the object and take note of what images, sounds, phrases, and emotions pop into your mind. Double check and make sure that these things are not of your own creation. 

🔮 Do not brush away any energies you receive, even if they do not make sense to you at the moment.

Witches standing over an open fire while stirring up potions in a cauldron is one of the many romanticized views of witchcraft. Today, witches brew many things for love, luck, health, wealth, and etc. Potions are a widely regarded instrument for witches. Potions are simply liquid spells that can be taken internally or applied externally to the body. Teas, enchanted perfumes, tinctures, and washes are the many forms these spells can come in. Some are used for healing, others are used in ritual or magickal work. 

Kitchen Herbs and Common plants for Brews

Back in the day, homemade teas and salves were the only medicine available. Using these things today is still very popular and a holistic approach to health that treats the mind, body, and soul together. What you use does not have to be expensive, it can come from your back yard or your home. Many of what you already have you can use to make tinctures, teas, and decoctions. Also, syrups, tonics, waters, and vinegars. If you work with the herbs you have at home already on hand, you will be able to create your own remedy with a distinct local flavor. 

The Power Behind the Plants

It is believed that many spiritual forces animate the world; called animism. When working with a plant or crystal, or performing a spell or ritual at a specific place, witches work with the spirits behind those plants or crystals, and call upon the spirit of that location to help them in their work. There is a special partnership and alliance between the witch and spirit, manifesting in forms of animals (familiars) or in the form of other plants, crystals, and locations. Over time, working with these spirits on various projects will deepen the relationship and the witch will gain information on magical associations, properties, and lore. These things often come through dreams, inspirations, or visions. The spirit will gain energy, attention, and physical shelter as animals or plants or crystals carried as a talisman.

When I first started reading tarot, I was overwhelmed. Part of me loved the insights and the artwork on the cards, but the part of me ruled by anxiety couldn’t handle the distress that came with seeing certain cards in a reading. I decided I wanted a light-hearted, empowering tarot deck that was a little gentler in handling bad news and shining with positivity at the good news.

I decided to go with a pastel scheme and cute imagery reminiscent of magical girls. While the minor arcana has the feeling of a coloring book or cartoon, the major arcana was meant to feel representative of the reader so linework is minimal. Overall, I wanted something simple that allowed the reader to fill in the necessary details. While some of the details of the traditional Rider-Waite deck have been incorporated into this deck, I omitted most of them because I found them constraining and sometimes limiting in a reading. This should allow a freer, more dynamic style of reading.

While this started as a personal project, enough people have shown interest in the deck that I’d like to make publication a possibility. This campaign is to raise the funds needed for startup costs to have a batch printed and available to those who are looking for a cute, free-spirited tarot deck. The more funds raised, the larger the batch I can have printed and the more that will be available.

Or at least, it’s a lot like an MMO.

Some people can’t even figure out how to log on, let alone afford to pay the subscription. Sometimes their computers are too old or their graphics card isn’t right, which makes the image blurry and the animation choppy and it crashes every couple of minutes.

Most people start out at level one, and they have to grind through the really boring story stuff.  Lots of times these people are confused and misled, but also amazed by the open world, and they run around a lot without getting anything done.  Many of those people will level up for a while without ever making any friends or joining any guilds, which is a totally perfect and valid way to play.

Some people have one of those instant level 99 tokens, and they level up instantly, and are kind of overwhelmed by how difficult the game was right off the bat.  Sometimes those people decide it’s in their best interest to quit now before they stress themselves out, and that’s okay.

Some people get in the game and they already have friends who are in pretty high-ranking guilds, so they’re pulled into giant awesome boss fights.  And man, are the boss fights awesome.  They play their role naturally and have a really great and fun time doing it.  Everyone in the guild really feels how fun and exciting it is, and the people watching them stream the game are also pretty excited, even if they’re a bit removed from the situation.

And the next day, when they’re talking to their IRL friends and they say, “Oh man, killing Archimonde last night was so cool,” their guild friends will totally relate, and agree with them!  But their IRL friends, who have never touched an MMO, will just kind of say, “Yeah, that sounds pretty cool,” even though they can’t relate at all.  They feel a little left out and almost like they’re expected to play the MMO, even though they can’t really commit the time to learn how to play.

And meanwhile, there are thousands of other players who have beaten the same bosses, played the same games, earned the same trinkets, and had guilds of their own.  Some people have explored most of the game without ever beating a boss.  Some people spend their time on the market earning gold. Some people play on a trackpad on their laptop and some people own a Razor Naga mouse.  And some people never even pick up the game at all.

And all of this is totally and completely valid.

I personally have struggled with horrible nightmares. I wake up gasping for air, drenched in sweat, feeling all the despair I felt in the dream upon waking. I was unable to get back to sleep because of the anxiety. The nightmares felt real. When amethyst only made my nightmares more vivid, I looked for something else.

Crystals

⭐️Howlite⭐️

I swear up and down this stone changed everything for me sleep wise. Howlite is known to bring peace and to ease sleep patterns. I keep it in my pillow case, and sleep with it every night. I’ve suggested it to friends who was also suffering from nightmares, and this worked for her too. As soon as I started doing this, my nightmares stopped.

⭐️Blue Howlite⭐️

Also goes by Turquonite. I was drawn to this stone at my local crystal store because of its color. It also brings peace, like normal howlite. It’s also known to relieve anxiety, and help with insomnia. I also keep this in my pillow case.

⭐️Flint⭐️

I was drawn to this stone at the crystal store, because I had seen the exact stone while meditating days before. Flint has been used for decades to combat nightmares. It also helps connect your physical and spiritual self. Keep it by your bed, or in your pillow case.

⭐️Selinite⭐️

I sometimes put two wands at the base of my bed, and one wand at the top, to create a triangle around myself. Selenite is great for protecting you from negative energies. It also promotes peace.

⭐️Celestite⭐️

I haven’t used this personally for nightmares, but a friend of mine has. She pairs this with howlite in her pillowcase. It surrounds you with love and light. It is also said to connect you with angels, or foster connections with higher realms. Celestites gentle energy is great to keep in bedrooms. It promotes restful sleep.

⭐️Chalcedony⭐️

Chalcedony protects against negative external influences that often lead to nightmares. It’s said to harmonize the mind, body and spirit. This stone has so many benefits, I could go on and on about it. Seriously get yourself some! I carry it with me often, and sometimes meditate myself to sleep while holding it.

Herbs

⭐️Bay Leaves⭐️

Bay leaves are so wonderful, for like, everything. Light one on fire while wishing for good dreams. Offer them to your deities as you ask for help. Sleep with them in your pillowcase, as I do, for protection.

⭐️Rosemary⭐️

Rosemary promotes peace in the home. It’s also said to ward off evil. Keep it in your bedroom.

⭐️Sage⭐️

I burn sage in my room every night, working counter-clockwise to remove any negative energies. I make sure I sage my pillows, my bed, my tv, and my phone. I sage myself everyday before bed. You can also keep sage in your pillow case.

Miscellaneous

⭐️Essential Oils⭐️

I diffuse essential oils pretty much all the time. If you’re like me and not a huge fan of lavender, try vanilla and Cedarwood, Frankinsence and Bergamont, or eucalyptus and peppermint (my personal favorite).

⭐️Ask for help⭐️

In all seriousness, whatever you work with in your craft, ask them for help. I learned this in an AA meeting of all places 😳. When anything in your life is eating at you, ask for help, ask your higher power to take it from you. I’ve asked for my nightmares to be taken away, and it’s worked. I kid you not this works for everything. Trust the universe’s energy to help.

⭐️Meditation⭐️

Explore yourself through meditation. The more you explore yourself the more you are able to be at peace. Peace in your waking world = peace in your sleeping world.

⭐️Nutrition and Excersise⭐️

I know I know you’ve heard this a million times. But, I was working with a trainer for a while, who did this health questionnaire with me. The results showed that my adrenal glands were overworked, resulting in anxiety, poor sleep, and digestive issues. When we incorporated meals of at least 3 colors (yay fruits and veggies), and regular excersise, my sleep patterns improved. There are also vitamins for adrenal support.
