((Logs in here exclusively because if I have to be assaulted with ads for Joe Zieja’s VA classes, you do too.
Now try getting Wrio saying “Tired of putting on pants?” out of your head.))
"Hmm, true. You don't need to break a law to spend more quality time with me. You can just ask."
"No need to tease." Despite her best attempt to hide it, her cheeks still flushed. "I'm sure if you have any time on the surface, you already have plans on how to spend it."
“Nah. They keep telling me I need to take more days off and I need to spend more time up here in the sun. But they never actually say what I should be doing.”
"It was indeed a crowd pleaser...but I was advised that no matter how skilled I believed I was, it put the audience at risk. And unless I wanted to spend some extra quality time with you, I should consider removing it from my routine."

"I promise all of my tricks are entirely safe. I've made the decision to retire the trick with the knives."
"Aw, you did? I kinda liked that one."

"To be fair, I am a scoundrel." A smile played at his lips when he saw how much Pauli was fidgeting as she said all this. He was well-aware that she knew he was deeper than that.
"But you always seem to see the best in me." He reached out, tilting her head up. "No need to act like you're confessing, you know."
〚 ⋆.˚ ☾ .⭒˚ 〛THE SHOCKED EXPRESSION from before, albeit not as extreme, slowly showed itself once more as Adrien took the time to actually process his words, blinking once before everything clicked into place — he HAD definitely seen this man in the paper that came out after the flooding had happened, memory recalling the now too-familiar handsome mug being front and center with a name to go along with it.
Not only had Adrien made himself look like a complete fool, he'd done it right in front of the very Duke of Meropide… There's no way he'd ever recover from this one.
And yet, he tried his best to keep his cool despite the way his brain was now screaming at him. It's not every day you just ran into someone of Wriothesley's status, let alone on the surface! Adrien's a bit starstruck, back straightening out into a more proper posture as he frantically tried to find something to say.
" Y-Yeah, that sounds about right. You, uh… They put a pretty big picture of you up. Surprised I didn't recognize ya sooner. "
A roll of his eyes.
"I try to avoid Kameras when I can," he said. "I'm not a huge fan of getting my face out there and people knowing who I am."
"I might have a fancy title, but that wasn't my idea. I'm just a guy running a prison." And it wasn't the first time he'd said this to someone, either.
"...anyway," he said. "You know me, I should at least ask your name, right?"
〚 ⋆.˚ ☾ .⭒˚ 〛GODS ABOVE, please strike him down now and spare him from this awkward encounter… A deep sigh left the man as his gaze shifted to the ground below them, feet shuffling in place as he made sure to tightly secure his coin pouch so that it wouldn't be stolen again. He'll tuck it out of sight too just to be safe, gaze only returning to the man before him once he was sure nobody would be snatching up his money again.
" Huh. Maybe that is it… Coulda sworn I've seen you in the papers or somethin'. "
A hand raised to rub at the back of his neck as silence fell between them, Adrien's mind running faster than he could keep up with as that nagging feeling never left him. He'd have to check old newspapers he's held onto when he got home, see if he had been right about remembering a face. But for now?
" Thanks again for returnin' my money to me, and uh… Sorry if I made this whole interaction awkward. I'm not usually this much of a mess, I swear. "
"...in the paper?" He considered that for probably longer than he should have. Usually he managed to get out before any photographers snapped photos of him. And he preferred it that way.
And then he paused.
"...damn, she caught me, didn't she?" He shook his head and sighed. "Only thing I can think is them reporting on evacuation efforts during the flood. Couldn't exactly run from cameras when I was helping people out of the water."
A sigh. "No problem. I work for the government, technically. Would be pretty unbecoming to just let it go."
"Is it really so strange?" Navia was just used to quickly befriending people she met and sometimes they didn't know it. "I mean it's the very least I could do for the guy that came and saved us just in time."
"Also I decided you're cool and nice so you're my friend now." Said very quickly before sipping on her tea again. Had to stop herself from saying anything too ridiculous.
He had to pause to take that in for a moment.
And then he laughed.
"I think you're the first person who's actually said they want to be my friend," he said. "I guess that makes it official, then."
"Really? Well that must be exciting." She poured his cup and topped off her own. "About time you have some work life balance right?" He'd been down in that fortress for so long, it would probably also be an adjustment. "When you do, you'll have to let me know. That way I can get you a housewarming gift."
"...a housewarming gift?" He arched his eyebrows at that, looking genuinely surprised. "Didn't know you liked me enough for something like that."

"Just because I don't remember it, doesn't mean I can't nag." She wagged a finger. "But I've already given him enough lessons on emotions, probably doesn't need me to yell at him more."
"Should I happen to hear anything, I'll let you know." She lifted the tea pot again. "More tea?"
"...thanks. I appreciate that." At the offer, he nodded and held his cup out. "I plan on getting a house in Court of Fontaine, now that the whole flood prophecy thing is over. Apparently my title grants me some privileges. Maybe I'll get to see more of them, even if they don't know it's me."
"I've already nagged him about trials enough, I'd probably end up banned from Palais Mermonia if I yelled at him for this one too." She was already on thin ice when it came to entering the court room.
"It would probably be difficult to know for sure what happened to them all. As you said, they were not properly documented." She paused to sip on her tea. "Given how young they were, I would bet many of them ended up in places nearby. At the very least, much better off than they would have been."
"Yeah, I remember hearing about how many times you burst into court rooms." His voice turned amused. "I don't think he'd like you nagging him about a trial you aren't even old enough to remember."
He looked down to see he'd already finished his tea. Welp.
"...anyway, like I said, I doubt she'll remember me, let alone recognize me. As nice as it would be to see those kids turned out fine, I should probably leave it alone."
"That's... horrible. To think someone could do such a thing to children. A parent should be someone you trust to look after you... I can't imagine how you all must of felt." It was infuriating to know they were able to just keep taking in more and more kids. Made her want to just go around to all the children she knew and shower them in gifts.
"If I had been your lawyer, I'd be claiming self defense. It's not fair you ended up in jail for that." If anything, it was praiseworthy. He basically saved those kids as well as future ones. "Others would probably disagree, but it sounds like a swift justice was served."
"Yeah, well, you can take that up with Neuvillette if you want. He presided over my trial and handed down the sentence." Though in the end it wasn't actually him that decided, was it?
"At any rate, like I said, I didn't get a chance to find out what happened to any of the other kids. I guess that's a good thing because that means none of them ended up in Meropide."
It was a good thing she hadn't taken a sip yet. Mouth hung open as she stared wide-eyed. "Woah, woah, woah, public record or not... that's still a shocking thing to say so casually."
"You killed your parents?" As a kid no less! That was shocking, but would explain the hefty sentence he received. "I have so many questions, but I supposed I'll start with why?"
"Because those 'parents' were monsters," Wriothesley said before taking another sip of his tea.
"They adopted kids so they could sell them off. They physically abused us, barely fed us except for appearances to the public, and any of us who didn't sell were 'disposed of.'" Another drink.
"I killed them and set the other kids free. Obviously I didn't see it because I was locked-up, but I'm told after my case, the Palais Mermonia launched a huge investigation into human trafficking in Fontaine."
"Can never say no to a good cuppa," he said as he sat down and leaned back, his arms crossed.
Once they were both settled in, he said, "The woman looks like my sister." A pause. "Or, foster sister. We were both raised by a family who took in a lot of kids."
"Sister?!" She had just started pouring their tea when he dropped that. The look he gave earlier made more sense now. "Wow, if that really is her that would be an amazing coincidence."
"Do you think she'd remember who you are if she heard your name?" Certainly could at least recognize it from news and gossip maybe. Navia didn't fully know the details of his arrest. Just the shocking knowledge of how young he was when it happened. Her father had always spoke highly of him though, so how terrible could it be? She could have probably done some investigating. Prying like that without his permission seemed rude. Even if she was always curious.
“Nah, she wouldn’t,” Wriothesley said with a shake of his head. “I gave the police who arrested me a fake name.” A pause. “None of us were properly registered, so it became my real name.”
As soon as the tea was poured, he picked it up and took a drink.
Another pause before, “It’s public record so you’ll see eventually. The crime I went to Meropide for was killing our parents. All the kids ran for it. This is the first time I’ve seen any of them.”

〚 ⋆.˚ ☾ .⭒˚ 〛MOUTH QUICKLY SNAPPED shut with the man's clear concern, a cough leaving Adrien as he turned his head to the side for a brief moment before hand reached out to gratefully accept the pouch back. He felt like an idiot standing there gawking like that, face flushed when he finally returned his gaze to the other man's features.
" YEAH! Y-Yeah, sorry, I… It's been a long day. Thank you, for gettin' this back for me though. "
Another noise to clear his throat, and finally Adrien had a hold on his composure once more — normally he'd pry on where his coin pouch had been found, but given the wave of embarrassment he'd just gone through? He thought he'd be fine not knowing. Especially since now there was another question nagging at him, eyes narrowing in brief confusion as his head tipped to the side.
" Have we met before? You seem familiar. "
Archons help him if this guy was the one who snatched the bag off of him in the first place...
"Uh, right." Yeah, this guy looked like he was going to explode. Definitely not okay. But what was the point of prying any further unless he offered something up?
Wriothesley shook his head. "I, uh, don't live around here, so I doubt you've seen me. Maybe I just have one of those faces?" Literally no one else in Fontaine looked like him, so no.
"Well, consider my curiosity piqued." Shifting directions, Navia motioned towards the large ship. "We can go to my cabin up there. That's where I have meetings, so the others know not to bother me."
After scaling the pathway up, she opened the door for him. "Go ahead and take a seat. I'll make us some tea." And snacks of course, could never forget those.
"Can never say no to a good cuppa," he said as he sat down and leaned back, his arms crossed.
Once they were both settled in, he said, "The woman looks like my sister." A pause. "Or, foster sister. We were both raised by a family who took in a lot of kids."
